This evening I received a troubling phone call from a special young lady. She is in the 7th grade and her mother told her to call me to discuss what happened to her (whole class) at school today.

In short, the young lady's Texas History teacher chose to give their opinion of Texas' open carry. Basically saying guns are bad and come January 1 everybody is going to be running around shooting each other. Even used a specific scenario of going to Walmart and being shot, with no warning, at random. She indicated the teacher said this was their opinion. Regardless, she was very upset - at the end of our lengthy conversation she said she felt better/safer having talked to me but the tone of her voice indicated otherwise.

If you were a parent of a student in this class what would you do? I know what I would do - just looking for reactions from you folks.

This should be reported to the school where the teacher works.

I'm on the same page as each of you. My desire is to formulate a message for the young lady's mother to send to the school. Maybe she should also bring this to light at the next board and PTA meetings depending on the response from the initial message.

The liberal indoctrination continues...please work to ensure that these "editorial" comments have no place in the classroom.

I'm a TX history teacher. Stuff like that has to be handled carefully bc you can get fired over it! Like religious beliefs, we cannot impose our political opinions on our class. Unfortunately, I doubt the teacher will see any repercussions because of their 'side' in the issue. Can you imagine the difference if the teacher were advocating open carry in class?

I would call in the principal and superintendent and have a sit down with the child present. I would not involve the teacher until after the child has spoken. Then I would bring in the teacher and remove the child from the meeting. Some teachers can be very intimidating to children. I would make it very clear that it is only the teachers job to educate the child based on the subject matter. Opinions and current happenings in the world have nothing to do with the subject matter. If a child brings up the topic the teacher can easily put a stop to it.

I would also request my child have a different teacher for that subject.

This is about as far as you can go without really putting the screws to anyone. Remember teachers carry insurance and can easily lawyer up if they feel threatened.

Writing this is kinda me thinking as a parent. My wife is a 7th grade teacher, but she would never ever pull something like this. I asked her and she just smiled and kindly said "I'm not even going to get involved in that".

The media should be contacted if the issue isn't properly addressed by the higher ups.

If you really want to reinforce that you are serious, and if this were your child, monitor a few of the classes and take notes.

I certainly don't think this is a bad idea but does it really have value? Wouldn't the teacher simply run the classroom different with outside eyes watching?

Teachers main role is to brainwash children. This is how each country and society does it. If you don't agree with your school teaching methods then you must make a stand. You are paying these people do their jobs. If you sit back and don't object then don't blame the teachers if or when you kids values goes against your core values.

Remember this is a 7th grader's opinion of what the teacher said, that has been filtered through at least 2 other people. I would take it for it is worth, it is not my child or grandchild, this is the parent's responsibility to check out what really happened.

But in my opinion, if it really happened this way, more than one set of parents have probably already discussed this with school admin. The "ball" is already in their court, if it were my child I would wait and see what happens before any action.

As a teacher who has heard back some really "interesting" things that I supposedly said, the first step (also Biblical from Matthew 18), is to go talk to the teacher in private and then proceed from there. Merry Christmas all!

Really should not voice opinions in school, stick to teaching.

Thats a pretty bold statement. I, for one, do not feel as though my role is to brainwash children. I have several friends who are also teachers/coaches and brainwashing children is not what they do.

Now, I have had parent/teacher conferences with the he said/she said. It has always come out that the student was not telling the entire truth.

An accusation about the mental stability of the teacher -- extensive paranoia and debilitating fear -- has been voiced by a child. We must protect the children at all cost. The teacher should be checked into a mental facility forthwith for treatment. The teacher should be placed on a "no teaching" list; and should remain there until the teacher applies for and receives mental clearance from the DHS.

What is good for the VA is good for the goose....

We've all gone mad. Instead of saying a teacher shouldn't have an opinion, should we not ask why they are all anti-gun and liberals? Political correctness is the culprit. This single instance is a mere fart in the wind.

If the teacher had used a positive self defense scenario for the new open carry law, would we be chastising her?

No...because that would be instruction on the lawful application of the constitution....law abiding citizens whom have had a background check and training in order to get a CHL do not go to WalMart and randomly shoot people....this teacher is an idiot who apparently knows little about the law (Constitution) and less about history.....first act of any tyranny is to disarm the citizenry...aka Hitler, Stalin, Moa, etc.......
