Any body hunt crows, and if so how do u do it and what seems to be your most succesful method.

ya but how many do you really shoot in any given setting witht that method?

We got into it a few years back. We used crow decoys and an owl decoy and played a crow owl fight. Worked good. Also, we used some dead crows as decoys and that worked just as good.

got any special tricks you learned? some i figured out, they fly in always into the wind, u gotts shoot the scout first and stuff like that, u got any?

1st - don't let them see your gun! A gun is the best scarecrow...

2nd - I've always been taught to take the scout out first and have had good luck with it.

3rd - get a coathanger and some of those black kitchen trash bags to form a decoy. With this wind we've had lately, they make good decoys and are not hard to carry. This is mostly to get their attention so that they won't pay too much attention to you.

i like to park the truck in some thick trees... then just crank up the crow fight on the CD player and get ready! we've had em come in fightin and makin all sorts of racket! so fun!!! just wait till a few are within shootin distance and start shootin! if ur lucky and gotta crap load of em take ur plug outta ur gun and just startin shootin away! lol

Ya! seems like when i hunt by myself i get more, hunted one day by myself and shot 23 crows. Had one land about 3 ft from my muzzle in the tree i was under! But when i go with my buddies we never get as many, i think they see one of us before we can get a shot off.

I used to hunt with a buddy, put out crow and owl decoys. Fight tape, with occasional mouth caws. My buddy on one of the setup and me on the other. We we both experienced at being still, so we didn’t spook them to early. We normally left the scout bird alone, unless he spotted us too early. Pecan orchards are the best option, IMO, if you got access to one. They like to show up anywhere you usually dump your carcasses, also. With crows, once you shoot them up at a spot, it is best to move, and just keep moving, whenever they quit coming in to call.

I used to shoot them with a shotgun, till they quit coming in, then switch to a rifle...22-250 was my choice. When using a rifle, I always waited till they were facing me or facing away from me, as it presents a much larger kill zone, which is useful at longer ranges.

The other commenters are correct about too many people messing up a crow shoot. Alone or with one other experienced hunter works best. Crows are like turkeys, they can spot you moving from a long way off.

Oklahoma has a Crow season. Some years after all other bird hunting here has closed I will run up there during OK late Crow season for a last hunting season public land bird hunt or two. Usual Owl decoy and a few Crow decoys. Use the recorded Crow fight played loud and some mouth calls mixed in with it. Sometimes I will get on a spot that they keep coming, but mostly it is a run and gun operation. Set up, call, shoot until few birds start showing, load up the truck and move to another area, and repeat. I don't overthink the sentry crow concept, but yes sometimes a first bird will see me or I'll miss the shot. The Sentry will end up taking a high spot out of range calling to other crows and make the hunt difficult, but most of the time the birds can't help themselves and show up anyway. Another reason I go is for the dog to have some end of season fun. I don't worry about hiding my dog. If anything it draws them more. Do not let an inexperienced dog retrieve crippled crows. Double tap cripples first. Shot crows also get laid out as decoys. A game changer for me was to add a flapping crow (actually a Halloween prop flapping blackbird decoy) to the base of my owl decoy. The vision of an owl holding a flapping crow drives them crazy and tunnel visions them on the decoy allowing me to move around more.

Another way I hunt them up there and find it more fun, is a combination squirrel and crow hunt. No decoys, just a mouth call. When I am hunting squirrels around the native pecan trees in the fall, the crows will already be in the area eating the pecans. I'll stop every now and then, stand by a tree and make some mouth calls till a crow or three shows up. I'll take my shots as they fly through the tree tops. Then move on Squirrel hunting. And repeat several minutes later. It can make a bad squirrel hunt fun, and a good squirrel hunt more fun. Many of the Federal rules in states without a dedicated season such as Texas have become complicated. Like your supposed to have tried other less lethal methods to remove the crows first, calling and decoys does not count for depredation because your trying to attract them, and non toxic shot required. But as for as I know, this is not enforced by Texas Game Wardens on private land so it is a very grey area.

This makes me think of Old Crow, bad taste! Very interesting birds to hunt, have also enjoyed OK crow season up at Ft. Cobb back a few years ago.

My buddy Jim and I took a couple of large boxes out to the city dump on a Saturday and went back Sunday. We just hid in the boxes and waited, had the whole side of that hill covered in dead birds. It was definitely a target rich environment. I believe that was my sophomore year in high school. I was using and old 12 ga LC. Smith with 30 inch full choke barrels.

they migrate to the south plains in the fall /winter. They roost around the playa lakes. Many moons ago , I was invited on a crow shoot near Brownfield. My host told me to bring 4 boxes of shells. I was skeptical , I had never fired a hundred rounds at anything. We arrived about one hour before sundown , turned on a portable electronic call
and it did not take long. I was using my Browning auto 5 with no plug. After the first shot , I don't think I ever had the magazine full. , Two of us shooting and
they were dropping like flies. This was early on in the fall , My host said after a few outing they wise up a bit. I had a very sore shoulder the next day.

We've got 7 big pecan trees here at the house and my neighbor to the northeast has 4 or 5. There's never a shortage of Cows around here in the fall. I'm inside the city limits so my crow shooting is done with the Gamo.

I have two pecan trees the crow raid every year. I ambush them from inside my workshop. They don't see me with the lights off. I set up my shooting bench just inside the front door that faces my trees. About a 50 yard shot. There is a 500 acre pasture across the road from me so no problem shooting. I use my 22 cal Ruger air rifle. Usually only get one or two a year, but that is enough to let them know to stay away.

Can you slap a suppressor on it?

Well, sitting in my shop there ain't a lot of noise gets out. And it's not that loud to begin with and I live where there aren't a lot of neighbors even though I am in "town".
