Within the next 2-3 months I'm planning to build some cabinets in our garage for some more organized storage. We currently have just some racks made out of 2x4s, but looks pretty cluttered. The wife wants it to look a little nicer and I figured cabinets would be the way to go. A buddy of mine had some cabinets professionally installed in his garage, which looks awesome, but I'm not looking to spend that much coin, if I can do it myself.

Now the question is, what's going to be the best type of wood to use? The cabinets will be painted, but I'm guessing regular ol' plywood isn't the best material for a "pretty look"?

Here's my buddy's cabinets and they look great, but $$$ due to them being custom built and installed. I basically want to do this but eliminate paying for the labor, if that makes sense. I already have a table saw, miter saw, circle saw, etc. so I'm got all that covered. I've just never done any big wood working projects to this nature. I know you can buy prebuilt, but saving a dollar there would be nice also.

I'm almost thinking MDF but will that hold up like I'm hoping?

MDF will not hold weight. I replaced all mine with 3/4" plywood when they sagged.

Are you talking about the shelves on the inside or the exterior as well? I plan to hang a rod inside, similar to a closet, to hang all of my hunting gear in there. One of our spare bedrooms was my hunting room, but now that a little rugrat is on the way, I need to clean my mancave out and move to the garage.

Mine were Gorilla Racks with MDF shelves. They failed after a few years. The plywood is holding up fine. I would not worry about the vertical pieces.

Cabinet grade plywood for the front and doors of you are painting. Regular 3/4 ply for avert thing else. 1x2 for support and pre-drill all the holes. I've built many garage cabinets this way, it's not cheap, but it is cheaper than buying pre-made or having customs done

I think it depends on how much weight you are putting on them. For the horizontals I use Mdf on plywood since I put a lot of weight on mine

Check out the closest Habitat for Humanity's Restore store. Builders donate "stuff" they don't want to them and sometimes you can find sets of cabinets.

Not a bad idea. I didn't even think of that.

Cleric, There wont be anything all that heavy. All of the heavy stuff will be set on the bottom so I wont have to worry about super strong shelves to hold 1000s of pounds. The heavy stuff and things that don't get used as often will be out in the storage building. These cabinets will be for things we use pretty regularly, but don't really have to have them in the house...i.e. camo, hunting backpacks, all hunting gear etc.

Also look at Lowes and Home Depot to see if they have any scratch and dent stuff they want to get rid of. I got a couple of sink bases and used them to make a work bench.

Waco Habitat Restore on Franklin Ave has a wide variety of stuff. And the stuff is always cheap. Great place. Might want to check Bodine's in Teague, He might have some from a house he was cleaned out.

Other than that, I would say cabinet grade plywood for the outsides and C/D for the shelves inside.

Oh trust me, I've already told him lol.

Thanks for all the other ideas. Normally the only time I'm going through Teague is on the way to the stand. Doubt anyone will be open that time of morning lol. I'll have the check him out after season is over with.

For floor to ceilind storage, I studded up shallow closets. Covered with drywall, tape and bed, painted to match garage wall. I built sliding doors. I could access if a car was parked in front of closets. For overheads on wall, I used surplus kitchen cabinets. But, if the cabinets had not been free to me, I would have just studded up some overhead the same way with sliding doors.

For doors, I built a 1x2 frame covered with masonite. Used some plastic track from Payless Cashways.
Yes, it has been a while. I dont live in house now. So no pics.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?
