Too much drama trying to find a place to hunt anymore. Selling everything and using the money to buy my kids video games. Really sad because they really enjoyed hunting.

That's a horrible idea. I'm about as broke as they come with 3 kids and would never ever sell all their guns for video games.

It breaks their heart not having a place. So I have to sell everything and move on so they don't have to look at their hunting stuff and not be able to use it.

There is always a way!!!! Heck, it might have to be late season , but they could shoot some doe or something at my lease later on. It's hard but we adapt and overcome the best we can. Good luck. I wouldn't sale all their stuff just yet. Have some faith bud.

You post a thread looking for a lease at 12:06 am then at 12:09 am decide to sell your kids gear & quit hunting.

Bad idea Marine. Looking at unused hunting stuff is not going to hurt the kids. Video games will.

I didn't want to mess with a lease so I rented 10 acres until I can buy it. It's not much but the kids love it and you can still hunt. Stay optimistic and something will come your way better than you were hoping for

Ya, after I posted looking, I read how many other are as well. So I said to heck with it. Need to move to a state that allows more public hunting!

There are lots of other websites to that offer leases. Just do a google search for hunting leases in Texas.

uhhhh. You can do public land hunts.. Kid friendly at least to get out in the open. go during the afternoon of the week and not many people at all. This sounds like a sad attempt to get to use someone's land. Sorry but I am not buying it.

You can buy whatever you want. Truth of the matter is, finding a kid / family friendly place to hunt is very difficult. You are not very smart telling me to take kids public land hunting during the week, what about school? I have also heard the horror stories of the weekends on public land, no way will my I subject my kids to that.

I have no dog in this fight, so to speak, but I bet you already know whether video games vs getting to hunt again some time compares. Many folks in the same boat as you, nothing new. Have you thought about a once a year out of state hunting trip, like elk in Colorado if they are old enough? Assuming your kids are very young, since you're considering VG. I guess I am a bit surprised that a man that made it through BOOT and continued on would give up? May be time to "adapt and overcome" confused2

BTW, I have hunted public before and after the 1st or second weekend it was quite dead as far as hunters go. I hunted Corps land around lakes, mainly around lake whitney. A lot of deer and some thick stuff, also a lot of turkey back then. I think now you have to get a day permit from the corps office IDK.

Don't give up, teach those kids perseverance and patience. I had a cousin that was in the corp, a Marine Gunner iirc, he said marines never quit, is this true?

Afternoon hunts... Also I have been hunting public land for years and it is not as people say, by now all the public land areas are thinning out with people. Urban legend... There are plenty of ways to get around this and get a place to go.. Wish you the best of luck.

Giving up is always an option. When things get tough, quitting is typically the easiest decision.

Finding other options is another. Looking at lease search engines, finding out all the public land and draw hunts available in your area is another. Since you are military, there are options there too that others aren't privy too. Small game hunting is available in various locations. Reasonably priced doe and hog weekend hunts could be a great option if funds are limited.

Finding a good lease is difficult and takes a lot of time and networking to find the right place. There is always the option of finding a smaller place and leasing the place out so you can let your kids do what you want.

Good luck in your decision cheers

Thanks. I would lease 10 acres if there is no drama and the neighbors don't shoot every illegal buck in the area.

How about looking for a work trade with a rancher or an outfitter? Fixing fence, checking water, filling feeders, clearing brush or whatever else needs to be done? That is exactly what I did a few years back so I could get my boys to not only appreciate good hard work but also to get them out hunting. Also even if you did have to sell everything, I'm sure you can come up with at least a dozen or more other things to get the kids involved other than video games!

Great idea! By the way, the video game comment was hypothetical. We don't even have cable TV...

You say you would lease 10 acres if the neighbors wouldn't shoot everything that walks....who cares your kids aren't going to care as long as their in woods it doesn't matter the time spent with you is all they will care about. Texas has a ton public opportunities just have to pursue it. May word your post a little different but sure sounds like your just looking for a free ride. Good luck to you.

Not looking for a free ride at all. But with a wife and two kids that hunt, the $2000 per gun leases are out of my price range a little...
Your right about the small tracts.

Suck it up Nancy is the term that comes to mind. There is a lot of public land to hunt. Texas is big. There are bunches of successful public hunters on THF.

Don't give up looking, there are plenty of places out there that are affordable ($600-1000 for a 1000+acre lease) just have to look around and get to know folks. It's all about who you know, otherwise go hunt public land.
