anyone else noticing a lack of birds?

we hunted yesterday morning and did not see the numbers of birds we expected to see....a few flocks of gadwall and some greenwings and that was it.

drove over to my uncles place (which has a 60 acre lake on it with no hunting pressure) and saw a few teal and a few gaddies but normally its covered up with them.

has it been pretty mild weather up north?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

No, not many ducks around at all and the ones that are here have tons of water to choose from.

I've been seeing plenty here in centex, more than enough to limit out each hunt.

it will change next week when the playas up north will be under 2-6 inches of snow

if that does not bring some batches down, everything starting November 29th will be frozen up north for a solid 10 days. that should bring em down, just in time for the split bang

40 MPH NW winds again today but the Woodies are still here. Snow for tomorrow night should move some birds down to you playas down south! Duck numbers very low here.

Duck numbers for this time of year for us are definitely down compared to years past. I guess the only thing we are really missing are the green wing teal. Normally we see thousands every morning but I've seen more blue wings the last 3 weeks than I have greenwings. We actually shot 10 mallards this morning which is rare for SETX and even more rare this early in the year. They must have gotten excited and jumped the gun on the migration.

They have been here bud. I drive almost three hours a day to and from the office and see very few on lakes and ponds. Below is the link to where we launch on our property. This is not even in the flood waters yet. On the other side of the trees in the background is where we hunt and it is 10 fold! We use this as a resting place. You can see what type of stuff the birds are sitting in though. There are places like this all over Texas right now.

Been a very slow year so far. Lots of water and warm weather.

I have three good wood duck spots to choose from. Local, West, and to the North of me. One private and two public with no other hunting pressure. Sticking with those while the getting is good, so I have not been scouting and have no clue on other duck's migrant numbers.

Creek2Creek,
Are you seeing any Snipe yet? I figure they are of the same problem. No need to migrate this far until it freezes the ground up north, and ones that made it here so far spread out with all the places everywhere just like in your video.

You make a youtube "Ducks are in NTX", with no ducks in the video? I was waiting on a big group to jump up or something..

I believe he was just showing the amount of water that has flooded fields and things of that nature, and how the ducks have plenty of options and are spread out.

No, I did not see them, and the dog did not see them either from what I could see.

Why did you expect to see more birds? If you scouted the day before and saw birds, and the next day you go to hunt it and no birds, your comments makes sense, otherwise it doesn't. If you expected more birds because previous seasons you had birds, cant expect that, every season is different, private water and public. I'm glad it is that way, it would be boring if it was so predictable. All this water is good and bad, good in the sense there are many places to hunt, and get away from barney, bad in the sense that birds have many places to go, and harder and more challenging to find. I like the later myself.
