Hunting with my nephew and brother in law this morning to try to get them on their first deer ever. This guy came in with not much light yet and didn't stay very long at all. My nephew got set up on him but never did get a shot off, part of that was my fault because I couldn't tell much about him because of the light. Was really on the fence if we should take him or not, I couldn't tell much about him but I am wanting them to get their first deer this season. This was our sixth time to sit since youth weekend and the first buck we have seen. The only other deer we have seen was a doe right at day light that was just passing through. This is the first year we have hunted this place but we do have a lot of deer on cameras. I didn't think I recognized the deer. Before we left I went and got the card so I could see pics of him. Sure enough this was the first time we have got a pic of him. Anyways after seeing the pics I am kind of glad we didn't kill him because I think he has potential and we have many other mature deer on camera I would rather take. If he comes back out this afternoon it might be hard to make them not talk me into shooting him though. The time on the camera is an hour off.

Keep in mind this is a small 100 acre place outside of town that my dad bought more as a recreational place that we could use as a family and I could really care less if I kill a deer out there I am just excited to get to introduce them into the outdoors and be on their first hunts with them.

I would let them shoot it. The experience and excitement for you all would be worth more to me than that one deer to the herd. Good luck on your decision up

I agree on age but let them choose what to shoot, it will be more rewarding to you and them both.

I agree with these guys. Let thwm shoot whichever deer they want. Plenty of time to learn more about management, but they'll never forget their first deer.

I did tell him to shoot as soon as he turned broadside and he had a shot but it didn't work out.
