I've always been impressed with how fast the buzzards can find a dead animal, but this weekend I was amazed.

I shot a buck around 8AM on Sat. and by 8:30 I had picked up the whole animal with the Gator and a Jet Sled - leaving nothing more than a little blood. The next morning, there were buzzards landing at the spot of the kill.

I've had them cruise over an animal that I shot only an hour ago. They didn't land, but the updrafts were obviously carrying scent and they were checking it out.

Had too chase them off a doe once. I was waiting for another doe to come out so I would have two.

I field dressed a deer at about 9:30 one morning and then as my father was going for the afternoon 3:30 hunt he said he saw the buzzards standing around smiling and not a sign of the gut pile.

Buzzards are quick, I have seen them within an hour, caracaras only take about five minutes, they are great help finding a downed deer.

x2

I shot a deer last season or year before and had a karakara standing on the deer getting at the gun shot in less than 5 minutes. Hunting in the hill country I shot a deer, DRT got down walked to camp and was back with the truck in less than 30 minutes and the buzzards already had the but eaten out! They don't waste time. They will be on our gut pile very shortly after you add to it.

On ranches that shoot a lot of deer for management purposes I have had cara caras and buzzards on a kill within 1-2 minutes in late season. I think after a while they hear the shot just as good as they smell the blood. I shot a doe one day and had a cara cara land on the body within 1 minute. Most will land close and walk around the body to make sure it is dead though. I think in deer season those birds use their eye sight as much as their sense of smell.

One time I had to walk about a half mile to get my 4-wheeler after I shot a buck. When I got back to where I could see the deer, it was surrounded by at least 20 buzzards. They took off when they saw me. When I got to my buck I could see they had already started trying to eat his booty hole. I don't know why they would start there, but they did. haha.

My son wounded a doe last year, and we lost the blood trail after about 45 minutes. Started doing a zig zag sweep of the hill and saw two buzzards land in a tree close by. Walked over there, and there she was, they led us right to her.

Years ago i had shot a deer, gutted it and went to get a vehicle to bring it in. When I returned 15 minutes later there was a couple eating from the gut pile. That was pretty impressive.

But what impressed me on Sat was there was nothing there for them to see. No carcass. No gut pile. Nothing and they were landing there looking for the dead animal.

I shot a pig on Saturday and within 10 minutes buzzards were swooping down close to it and landing in a tree nearby.

Many a deer hunter's fib has been uncovered by buzzards. They never miss the chance to expose shots taken but later denied, as well as false claims that an honest and lengthy effort was made to recover the animal after the buzzards found it less than 50 yards from the feeder.

If someone shoots a large boar they do not want to eat, and leave it in the middle of a wheat field, how long before the buzzards/coyotes take care of it?

Shot a deer at 8:30am last Saturday, by 9:45 two vultures were circling at the tree tops.
