Hey guys. I shot the deer my dad and I have been looking at for the past 2 years. He's a nice cull 8 point to take. When we get him on camera, he's always with other bucks. He came in alone this morning. I studied the deer for about 15 minutes just to make sure it was him. Started working on my breathing technique. Cross hairs right on shoulder. And bang! He drops like a rock under the feeder. I keep looking at him and he's just laying there licking his wound. I felt terrible! So I put another one in him. His head drops. You would think he would be dead after that shot. Nope. He is still moving. (Barely) and at this point. I just prayed that he would take a dirt nap very soon. I drove back to camp and here I am. I am going to give him a few hours more than normal to die. I feel terrible about this. I will get pictures up as soon as I can.

Give him some time. If you hit him in the chest he'll be dead quick enough.

Congrats. Show pics when you can. How come you didn't shoot again.

Smart kid , for observing & placing a 2nd shot! Good job.
Have read countless stories here where 'one shot heros' watch their buck go down, then 'totally shocked' when their buck jumps up 5min later & run off never to be seen again.
yours will be right there waiting for you to collect!

Welcome to the forums son. We have been watching this deer for 3 years and he disappears when the season begins. He has good mass and tall heavy brow tines. I am sitting in my stand as I type, here is a recent live picture.

Its not fun to see them suffer. Im sorry to hear that. It happens though and when it does i dont watch. I always hope for instant kill but rarely get it.

Hope it turns out for the best. I know it doesn't help now, but if they are moving, put another in him. Sometimes they just don't give up.

Good luck and keep us updated up

I will explain the shot, if the deer is not standing the body is not visible from the deer stand. The area is elevated on the other side of a draw.

Congrats! I don't particularly like the "killing/dying" aspect of it either. You did right to take another shot.

Glad you took another shot at him. I keep shooting till I know they are not moving anymore if I am unsure of my first shot.
