Starting to look at gun safes, anyone got any pointers? I remember a thread a while back that involved an electronic lock malfunctioning and causing lots of problems. What are some must haves and some absolutely nots?

Generally you want to stay away from the big box stores unless you absolutely must save money on it and aren't too concerned with actual security.
Most brands like Cannon, Liberty, Winchester, etc. have composite doors that are just wrapped in a steel skin and aren't actually thick like you would imagine them being. On top of that, the body skin is very thin and can easily be cut through with a cutoff wheel, etc. which most thieves don't have but is something to keep in mind.
Main thing with these types of safes is going to be installation positioning, etc. to get the most out of them. So long as it is bolted down to the floor and you have the door opening side up against a wall you should be good in 95% of scenarios besides maybe fire or a group of professionals.
There's a video on youtube where the guy puts a bar on the locking bolt of a liberty and with one hand breaks the bolt. It's pretty unnerving to me.

I'd like to see that Liberty video, because I did training on the Liberty safes and that is very hard to believe.

Or Fort Knox
There are better vaults/ safes but you could buy a new car for less.

Take the number of guns it says it holds and divide it by 3 to get the actual number it will hold comfortably. Buy one twice as big as you think you'll ever need.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Take the number of guns it says it holds and divide it by 3 to get the actual number it will hold comfortably. Buy one twice as big as you think you'll ever need. Count the # of guns you currently have then triple that to find the size safe you'll need. Then double that. You'll still end up needing to get a bigger safe down the road.

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect.

Amsec bf or sturdy safes are great for the money. Also, buy the taller size of whatever you buy. It's very nice having 2 shelves instead of one. Pay attention to the side wall thickness. Most doors are built well and the sides get 11-12 gauge. Watch some youtube videos and You will be shocked how easy it is to get into the cheap ones

What about electronic keypad versus combo lock? I have the keypad and love it, so easy to access the safe and very quick, I use my safe quite a bit. Also get the biggest safe you can get in your house, mine is so heavy no need for bolts to the ground I took into consideration fire rating when I purchased mine and paid a little extra for a better fire rating...
