Any idea what the going rate for one of these is? I thought they issued about 20 a year but I've never been able to get a firm price on one.

No!!!! 100-150k for tag and doesn't always include access.

Think there is only 2-4 tags a year depending on biologist recommendation

Bobo I think that's the state's tags for state land. I know a guy that flies some of the big ranches out there for a sheep count and he says the owners get several tags. But, yeah, it's high-dollar stuff.

NO, there are only 2-4 tags available to the public thru raffle or draw. There are usually another 15 that are issued to landowners to sell. Population numbers are at around 1500 in 7 mountain ranges. Kinda of a travesty that TX has such a strong sheep population and has such a limited public hunting program for the.

I highly doubt the cost is 100-150k. Maybe for an auction tag, but not a basic landowner tag

I forgot about LO tags.

I don't know about it being a travesty. Those ranches weren't free.

I would image those tags are well over 60k being you don't see them advertised. Once the allocation is published I image they are gone instantaneously.

Land is pretty cheap out in the desert. You could pay for half the ranch if you sold a couple of 150k sheep tags.

There are usually 8-12 LO tags per year. They fluctuate in price with the economy but have been running about $80-85K the past few years.

Seems kind of silly to say but in the world of Desert Bighorn hunting that is the best bang for your buck going today considering the quality of rams Texas consistently produces. You can get some Mexico hunts in the 50-60K range but the quality overall on those hunts cannot match Texas'. There are big rams in Mexico (Tiburon Island, Carmen Island, etc) but those hunts are well into the six figures.

The man to call if you want access to a prime LO tag and guide who knows his stuff on TX Desert Bighorn hunting is Larry Altimus. Just Google Altimus Adventures. Pretty sure there is a 3-4 year backlog on tag availability.

Cheap is a relative term when you toss in the acerage required to get a tag. No including loss of grazing etc.

80-85K is not going to make or break the LOs who have those tags. We are talking huge ranches. They could charge twice as much for them and I'm pretty sure they would get it easily.

I know of one lady who threw her LO tag in the trash every year - just didn't want any outsiders on her ranch.

Concur with NP. We aren't talking 10k acre pastures more like 50k-400k acre pastures

well considering that TX has approximately half the Desert Sheep population Arizona or California has but roughly twice what New Mexico, Utah or Colorado have... yeah I'd say its strong.

Desert sheep hunting is right up there in cost with any hunt in the world.

Only way I was going was the way I did - hit the tag lottery.

Larry had a TX tag available for 55k at the bottom of the economy in 2009. I tired every way in the world to justify getting it. Couldn't do it and had to pass.

Price a ranch with sheep or sheep habitat on it.

I'm just saying, land here in Webb county is like 4 times the price if you have a decent whitetail herd on it. I've looked around.

It's not strong at all. Just because we have the most doesn't mean anything. The only reason they even let people hunt is to make money to help conserve them. Land owners in Texas and Mexico work very closely with tpwd to keep the numbers.

You're saying 1500 is a lot over millions and millions of acres, I don't even know what makes you think that. There's probably more aoudad than big horn and they do nothing but out compete and spread diseases.

Both mention that a Bighorn might get lost and walk across the ranch.

I mean I'm not going to argue that it's not a lot of money, but 9 mil for 18k acres is a steal down here.

I'm just saying that bighorn hunting is expensive no matter how you look at it, but it's understandably so based off of the herd population.

You will not be disappointed. Larry is a top notch hunter and guide. He knows those ranches and the sheep on them as well as anyone alive.

Be patient on the reply he is in MT scouting for a Rocky hunt for a client that starts Nov. 8th. If you go please let us know all about your hunt so we can go by osmosis. smile

Why is it a "travesty" for there not to be a lot of public access to animals on private land? You do know that 99+% of Texas land is private?

I would agree it is travesty that Texas doesn't have more public hunting land. Most states have pretty extensive public hunting areas.
