hi gang - love the forum. i just bought a bunch of axis, fallow, blackbuck a few oryx and a few P davids and a few red deer. they are coming from texas to south louisiana. I'm outside baton rouge. they are going into a 300 acre HF. We already have a 300 acre HF for whitetail that is successful that borders the new exotic HF area. both areas have a lot of oaks and about 60 acres of open food plots we will plant. the questions i have are:

1. what do you suggest i plant for the exotics? any trees i should plant that will
2. what is the best feed for exotics?
3. any vaccines i should give before releasing?
4. should i be concerned about them freezing? can i put hay out or something for them to go in if it gets cold?
5. any diseases i should watch out for? grasses they cant eat?
6. how are they with coyotes? we have a few...
7. any other suggestions i should do or be careful with?

thank you guys for the input!!!
Scott

Lots of good questions that I'm interested in hearing replies to.

Did you buy all your animals from the same place?

If they survive the first month the the only things you have to worry about are coyotes and parisites.

Axis, Fallow, Oryx, Red Deer and Black Buck are mainly grazers, so Coastal Bermuda or Klein Grass are good choices for improved pasture grasses. Any good cattle type native grass is good also. If it gets to tall then shred it back down for new growth. Haygrazer in the spring/summer along with oats/wheat in the fall/winter will work also. I would have planted and prepared before I released any animals. I hope who you bought them from wormed them when at capture. Blackbuck and Axis do not do well in damp/cold/icy weather. Start to work on predators now.
welcome

thx for the answers!!! here are a few answers u asked for....

1. bought animals from three different places...
2. pre-paid and can take delivery anytime. getting set up right then taking animals in the next few months.
3. any suggestion on what kind of alfalfa squares? or any kind in the winter?
4. anything i can feed them to help with parasites?
5. whats the biggest killer of exotics besides coyotes?
6. thx for info on grass! any kind that will grow well in the winter in louisiana?
7. they can still worm them before releasing. any particular type of worming i should ask for? anything else i can give them to help make sure they survive better?
8. any kind of shelter i can provide of them? bales of hay to lay in? crazy to say but what about building a few tin roof shelters?

thx!!

scott

Here's a link to a list of LA deer farms Link I would contact some of the closer ones and see who they use. There will be a lot of places that have feed to sell to hunters in modest quanity you need to find the real farm suppliers.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

When I know its going to be cold wet and Icy/Snow, I put out a couple of Round Bales on their side (not the end) that way they can eat on them and I roll them out 15-20 Yards every Day or two while Snow or Ice is on the Ground to give them dry bedding, Blackbuck especially can go longer without eating than they can laying on Ice/Snow.....
