How about putting a good dog down and hunting behind it? It is alot more rewarding.

I would prefer that, too. If I had a dog, and if the brush were not impenetrable.

DO NOT Use deer corn! Studies have shown a toxin in mold on corn is harmful to quail. Sunflower seed is like candy to the little fellers.

Milo. I feel your pain.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

So you're going to spread feed on the road and shoot them as they come to eat it? Why not just duck or dove hunt?

Cause quail tastes a whole lot better than either of those options....

Why not just mind your own business

I agree it's better than duck, and probably dove. Can't tell a whole lot of difference between quail and dove though.

Sorry, JEH, if I crossed the line. I just tire of snob hunters who think their way to hunt is the only way, and look down upon others when they know nothing of the other's situation.

You make a post on a public hunting forum, basically saying you want to put feed in roads to pot shot birds and then say to mind my own business? If you don't want people to comment about what you're doing don't put it out there. up Now if it's blue quail and you're trying to get them out to then put dogs down, I've heard of that before, I've never hunted blues so I've never seen first hand how they run, but I can only imagine.

Sorry, don't think it's being a "snob" hunter. I thought it was widely known it was a bit unethical to pot shot quail on roads. Maybe I was raised differently. Have fun with your hunt, use #9 shot, more bb's and you can kill more at once. Good luck and good eating up

I posted on a public forum and asked for help, not your opinion.

Your condescending comment was based on several incorrect assumptions.

I haven't hunted quail in a long time. I love having them around, but due to the drought, numbers have been down and I haven't felt like taking any. It's been a wet year and we now have a good population

I don't have dogs and although I love watching them work, I wouldn't want to use dogs because they would get torn up in the thorn brush, and in many areas you can't walk anyway.

If by pot shooting, you mean shooting on the ground, I don't do that. The attractant is to bring the birds to the road, where one can approach slowly, and take them when they flush...not unlike a dog's point. This is not uncommon practice in the brush country.

Now, if you don't mind, I will enjoy my avocation the way I chose, and the way local conditions dictate, and you please feel free to do the same.

BTW, baiting doves is not legal, so I would not want to follow your advice there.

I wasn't talking about baiting dove. I know it's illegal. It's also illegal to bait duck. It sucks that you can't use dogs out there, nothing better than seeing a dog lock up on point. My apologies. As stated above use milo and not deer corn. Several studies have show it to be toxic to quail. Good luck with your hunt.
