This video was captured by Chester Moore and was taken in an area of southeast Texas where the red wolf was last known to exist. The video was taken about two years ago. Chester has seen four more and has a 5 1/2" track cast from the same area.

Looks like a big coyote to me, but of course red wolfs and coyotes did mate to make hybrids! Im sure many coyotes have little red wolf dna in them. Think about the only way to find out is shoot and find out. The nearest red wolf still alive in texas is. In the Victoria zoo or wild in North Carolina! We have some big ole coyotes here, those little pigs provide plenty of protein for them!

It's actually a black panther dressed up as a coyote for Halloween.

Looks like one to me. I had heard they released some in Texas around 1990, but don't know if that was just "rumer", or fact. I have heard some of the last remaining wild ones, are somewhere where this video was claimed to be taken.

Lots of yote carry wolf DNA in different regions. Louisiana ran a study a few years back and I was really surprised with how many red wolf DNA carrying yotes they produced.

I attended a lecture given by Chester Moore three weeks ago in Jefferson, TX and in that lecture, Chester pointed that there is another wolf specie that was thought to also be extinct in Texas, and that is the TEXAS GRAY WOLF - Canis lupus monstrabilis. There have been some possible sightings in Central Texas, which was its area of origin before becoming extinct.

It was a small to medium-sized, relatively pale, plains wolf that fed largely on bison until the bison herds were wiped out and replaced with cattle, whereupon it switched to cattle and was consequently wiped out itself. It's the standard, sordid story.

Ranchers have claimed to have spotted the Texas gray and also state that its howl is very distinctive from a coyote.

jdickey, I have heard that as well. I heard that even back in the early 90's while living in Erath Co. I suppose it's possible.

Looks like a red wolf to me. They do have a captive breeding program at "Fossil rim", west of Glen rose.

How could you stand to sit through a lecture by Chester Moore? He wears me out just trying to read one of his articles. Texas Fish & Game Magazine, must of been hard up to find an editor when they picked him.

Perhaps the key difference with these smaller wolves is the larger and more muscular body that make the legs appear shorter than what you see with a coyote.

The key giveaways are the head and ears. Wolves carry a larger and more threatening nose and mouth, shorter ears, all of which is visible in the photo.

I killed what looked very much like a wolf back in the late 70's in Mississipi. What was so strange about it was how it appeared the pack came back and wore out a large section of the bank where I had drug him out of the creek where I shot him. Once I got him to the top of the bank, I threw him over my shoulders and carried him out, making that the point where his scent stopped. My wife's uncle and I both theorized that perhaps the pack wore out that section of the bank, even going so far as to dig deep into it in places, trying to locate him. It may have also been the mate looking for it.

That background doesn't look very south east Texasy...

Even in NC they believe that the Red Wolf may be extinct due to hybridization I believe there's a conference scheduled for both sides to make their arguments. There will be cases of throwbacks in the hybrids that look pure but are not. A little bit of wolf biology. Wolves drive off some of their young when a pack gets too large. When their is a sufficient number of packs the dispersers will mate and form new packs either in new territory or by stealing territory from an existing pack. Most packs are stable until they lose their alpha male & female. A pack will never adopt a disbursing male but will a female. In a healthy situation a disburser pair will mate and form a new pack taking territory from a weakening pack. In low population situations disbursers mate with coyotes leaving no purebred wolves to take over for weakening packs. Twenty years ago there where not many coyotes in all of NC, but that has changed, with populations rapidly increasing. The number of red wolves had been about 35. Relative populations and basic biology paint a pretty bleak picture for red wolves in the wild.

nsmike, I live in eastern N.C. where the RED WOLVES were put in pens and raised.
the fish and wildlife told everyone the wolves would not leave the island,(wrong), they are in the 5 surrounding counties. it was made illegal to kill coyotes and red wolves until this past spring, you could get a permit to shoot coyotes .
their is no way the fish and wildlife can tell how many RED WOLVES are in N.C. ,the land is to thick to ever get a accurate survey. stand behind my house on a full moon and you can here large packs howling back and forth,
the only way to tell a RED WOLF from a coyote is thru DNA, ask the biologist. at one time we had a very strong deer herd, seeing 25 to 30 deer in a sit.now you are lucky to see a deer. so maybe all the RED WOLVES & coyotes will starve to death. Forrest

The true wolves, will kill the crossbreeds they catch in their territory, the ones that can manage to survive in the buffer ground between packs, will breed with coyotes until they lose there wolf characteristics.

It'd be really cool if Red Wolves could make a comeback in Texas. It wouldn't be the best thing for the deer population, but it would make for a more wild, natural ecosystem. I'm all for it!

My wife has a lot of relatives that live in wolf country here in MN, from their experiences, I wouldn't be in favor of it.

I think they might really help with the feral hogs until they thin them out and start on the deer and livestock. No Wolves is a good thing!
