I've been fiddlin' with acid etching a few blades. Hope you like them.

I'm guessing ferric chloride. That's what I etch my Damascus blades with.

Hetman, we use acids to oxidize the surface of the steel to add color or patina. Like MikeC says, this was done with ferric chloride which is also used to etch Damascus steel to highlight the pattern in the steel (unetched damascus looks like regular steel).

Milder acids like vinegar or lemon juice are used to bring out temper lines. There's a art/science to getting different finishes,
but the trick is getting nice even finishes and avoiding a spotty or streaky look.

Like both of them a lot. Question, how deep does the acid etching penetrate the steel. Will it be gone on the edge with the first
sharpening.

Michael, these surface treatments like etching or bluing don't penetrate the steel & are pretty much for aesthetics although they will provide a small degree of protection from the elements. Sharpening will remove it as will usage. Thanks for commenting.
