Checked the game cams over the weekend and since the rain came in, so have the hogs! Lots of them....every camera had hogs and very few deer. We've had pics of a few here and there all summer, but this rain really brought them back. Is it too late to install pens around a few feeders? We've never had to put up pens, so I'm worried it will cause the deer to just go to the neighbors. Of course, if the hogs don't move off.....we might not have much of a deer season this year anyway

In my experience the hogs will make your deer leave more than your pens will. I'd put them up quick.

Build the pens with plenty of space(circumference around feeder) for deer to jump in and plenty strong to keep hogs out. Don't skimp on supplies. Deer won't mind at all.

I built an 8 panel pen about a month ago and had pics of deer in it that evening. Didn't seem to phase them one bit.

Put a minimum of 6 hog panels if there are no cattle on your property OR a minimum of 7 cattle panels. Hog panels are shorter and easier to shoot over. If you do not have any cattle, horses or other livestock and you want to go "cheap" than you can cut the taller cattle panels half, length wise, and put the cut ends down. These panels will only be 26" tall but if you put them up in a circle, it will keep the hogs out. It has at our ranch. We never had a hog go over these "cut down" cattle panels. We have lots of hogs around Campbellton,Tx.

Never too late to build pens around your feeders. We build them '60 x 60' and 80' x 80'. Try and incorporate some brush inside your pen, too.

We have hogs that jump 34 inch hog panels. Not many, but one is more than enough to clean out your corn and keep the deer away. We have had to add two strands of barbed wire above the hog panel to keep the jumpers out. I'd start with 34 inch hog panels and then set up game cameras to monitor. It took several months before the jumpers started. They are usually older boars in the 150-200 lb range.

Same thing happened to me last year. Good deer in the 3 strand pen until the hogs showed up. At first it was one big one for about a month, no biggie until the rest of the family came in (about 2 dozen) almost every night. Got my hog panels up about just before deer season but it was too late. The hogs had fouled the pen so bad I never had a deer jump in until months later when the stench wore off. No problem since. Good luck friend.

2cents Been here close ta 30years... Never had hog problems here... Tis about being in right place right time... One good WARNING shot... Equals, some good grillen & chillen time & the rest scatter... Been over 2 months since seen hide or hair of hogs... scratch Gives the deer a chance ta mature, it went from 1 buck county ta 4 deer county think in 2010...
Small feeder pen ta keep hogs out not gonna stop deer from visiting... Deer are curious, built & repaired many a fence... Seen deer while doing it... flag

I did a trail and error with two pens. Took cattle panel and cut in half to make the first pens. 10 panels in a circle. It will keep the big hogs out I guess but not the little ones. Went back to the 34" hog panels and no problems since the change back.

Daylight pic of the pen height.
