We're gonna be in (near) Hawkins, TX the week of Thanksgiving. Any good duck hunting around there? Anyone willing to show an amateur and his GSP around? I know, some of you are probably wondering what on Earth I'm doing hunting ducks with a GSP but he loves any and all bird hunting. In fact, ducks are the only bird I can get him to retrieve. blush I might take my 6 year old with me if she's up for it. She loves tagging along with me when I go hunting.

The Old Sabine Bottom WMA is right outside of Hawkins. Always good bird hunting in there!

My family has a place just outside of Hawkins and I hear shooting on the river all the time. You can put a boat in at the ramp on 14 at the river. Just make sure you are legal in every way.

I assume on the Sabine River. How does that work? I know the river's public but I would assume this means you have to remain in your boat to keep from trespassing?

That's nice and close. Am I reading the rules right? Duck hunting only allowed in the a.m.?

Yes - most WMAs do not allow waterfowl hunting past noon.

LOL laugh

Not cyber scouting just looking for any tips if anyone wants to share. If not that's cool. A friend of mine told me last year that out in San Angelo they like to land in the pintails. Things came up and I never got to go last year to give it a try. I've only duck hunted 3 or 4 times in my life so pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also, am I reading the booklet right? Is waterfowl hunting only allowed on Tue, Thur and Sat? We'll be coming back on Saturday and I'm pretty sure things are going to be to busy on Thanksgiving to sneak away. bang

Yeah they have restrictions in days and times - Tu, thrs, and sat from 6-12 I think. Make sure you take a wade stuck. There are some big holes and quick drop offs. All in, it's a good place thoug

I am sure he meant 'wade stick'...to check depth of water, aid in walking through dense undergrowth that is flooded, etc...

I kinda figured that's what he meant after I gave it some thought.

The girls and I had a good time

And my dog did too.

I only got a shot at one duck and I completely blew it. I couldn't figure out why we didn't see more action being in the middle of such great duck habitat. I'm sure being far from knowledgeable about it had something to do with it.

Of course the more I thought about it the more it made sense. Out here in West TX there's so much less water that any little bit has a much higher likelihood of being hit. At least that's my theory. smile

Cool to see someone follow through with the trip report after the initial post. Thumbs up to you.
