Harvest a nice mature buck each year or a brute trophy every 5-10 years? This scenario is assuming LF, free-range, hunting pressure around you where nice bucks are fairly frequent but trophies are rarely seen. Thanks for playing..

All depends...
I would say for the hypothetical that it would be the nice mature buck each year.

Define Nice mature buck
and Brute Trophy
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Nice Mature buck being a 4.5+ yo and 130-145" typical, 170" non-typical, Trophy being 6+, 150"+, typical or 200"+ non-typical.

DQ, for me, in an AR county, might as well get a nice rack if I can only take 2 bucks. I want meat, but when we are like this I would rather take one that has a little something to him and have meat. If that makes sense?

I'd shoot the mature buck every year
btw there is a big difference between a 150" typical and a 200" non typical
I would not call a 150" typical deer a brute.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I would not call a 150" typical deer a brute. Fair enough, I had a big 150", 8 pt. typical in mind, not a 12 pt and for a 200" non-typical, that's still a pretty good buck either way..

I have been hunting the same place for 5 years and have not taken a trophy deer. Plenty of cull bucks and does but no trophy yet. I think this will be my year. I have a lot of patience and prefer to watch them grow as much as possible. My idea of a trophy deer and others ideas may be totally different. I feel a true trophy for me is a fully mature buck that has reached his maximum potential. I really do not have to worry about my neighbors much where I hunt at. I have watched the same deer since 2011.

Many people would though. All about perspective and not truly something that could be defined in general IMO.

Nice buck every year. But a monster once or twice in a lifetime would be nice. And as for the above, I'm one of those people as my "biggest buck" is still a spike.

In my younger years I would have said the mature buck every year. But over the years I've taken my share of nice (but not outstanding) bucks.
Not to say I won't ever shoot another buck, but my bucket list has 4 animals on it and one of them is an outstanding east TX whitetail from my place.
Mostly though, I am coming to appreciate just being out there where they live.....

Heck, where I hunt a 150" low fence would be HUGE! Even 130's are rare around here on low fence places.
But I'd rather kill the huge buck every couple years, I can kill plenty of does for meat.

Nice buck every year. But a monster once or twice in a lifetime would be nice. This. I think if this was the case, most hunters would be elated, but would it get boring???

I don't think most hunters would do it each year. There are stages of hunting and I think they come and go in waves. I can kill a 130"+ at my place almost every year, but I don't. I like to pick a deer and hunt him or hunt a mature deer later in the year. Don't care if I kill or not, it is about the hunt. If I get the chance to shoot every year, I will take it. Dad has been hunting for over 50 years and you can almost count on him killing a deer. There was a time, he just videoed and has video of some true studs that he let walk

Similar to how people are that live around a certain type of common game, like elk for instance, they get to where they'd rather travel to get a WT. I agree on the stages and believe it is a different threshold between folks.

Agree I think that is one of the reasons that a general statement for the definition of a "brute" is difficult. Some people live and hunt in areas that a 120" deer is the same as a 170" in another area. Similar to hunting in Kansas and Texas for me. A 130" deer on my Texas place is a trophy. In Kansas, it is more than likely a 2.5yo and would get a "nice deer" comment.

If it was easy, it wouldn't be what it is: hunting.
That said, there is no one size fits all as far as what a "trophy" buck is. All depends on the place/area.
