Shooting from Boat, is that legal? #5986517 10/21/15 01:51 AM

I'm a newbie to duck hunting, so wondering if it's legal to take a shot from boat or not? I'm not sure of the rules on that.

Also, anyone know where i can purchase some cheap netting to put over boat to camouflage it?

And last question, is it best to hunt with wind blowing towards you, behind you, or does it even matter...

THANKS FELLAS!

Yes. As long as it's completely stopped/still. I use to hunt out of a boat all the time. Be sure it's anchored down or tied off good to minimize rocking when you move.

I bought a 20'x8' net from academy a few years ago. $40 I think. Not sure if they still sell it.

Wind at your back or cross wind.

I believe you can hunt from a boat as long as it isn't being powered at the time.

In an ideal situation you would have the wind at your back (blowing from behind you). Ducks, like airplanes, prefer to take off and land into the wind. This means that decoying ducks would be landing in your face making them easier to see and shoot. Of course this is often dictated by the landscape you are hunting.

Academy sells a camo pattern burlap, as well as a similar synthetic netting.
I have also seen a guy that uses ground blind netting, without the frame. He holds it to the boat with plastic clamps like you use in wood working.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

Personal opinion crosswind is best. To your back is also good. Idk what it is about it blowing at you. Just makes its tough. Happy hunting!

Just an fyi, but unless you're hunting divers, most birds will smarten up to boat blinds after the first few weeks of season. Unless you have a killer boat blind that blends in really good with surrounding vegetation, you're usually better off stashing the boat 100 yards away & hiding in the shoreline veg

Absolutely legal. Just remember that at high speeds you have to do a reverse lead. Make sure to post up videos for us to all enjoy.

Jk- forward motion has to be ceased to legally shoot from a boat. Some states are different. In MA you can shoot crippled birds from a moving boat.

Is it ok to shoot a duck after he lands in the water, or has to be shot when landing? Just curious.

There's no law against it. But some frown upon it.

Best thing to do is let them land, line them up, shoot 6 with one shot. up

Guy, haha, pretty good thinking.... and I hear you FowlDreams on that angle, takes the sport out of shooting one, and i agree with that. I'm working on easing my 9 year old into the sport and if we have one land, may give him a shot at it with his new 410.... He's not too great with the moving targets quite yet. This was my thinking behind it.

I seriously frown on water swatting birds. Never done it, never will. Not that it's illegal or anything, I just personally frown on it. But when I take my 9 year old boy and his best friend hunting this fall, I'm gonna let em table blast every bird they can. They don't have the gun control skills to safely swing a shotgun yet, so I think it'll be a great way to introduce em to the sport while keeping everyone safe

I used to frown in water swatting. I used to frown in using live bait. I used to frown on using a rifle to hunt anything. I used to frown on high fence hunting. I just got tired of all the rules and proceedures. Now I just don't care. I have enough rules in my life. When I go hunt or fish, I just want to hunt or fish. I don't want to be grouped with anything. If anything I am quite anti-social when it comes to group opinions. I like sanding against the grain of you will.

I figure if the birds land in the spread I did my job.

I like your way of thinking. To many rules just takes the fun out of it.
Told the guys I hunt with that I just bought some new water targets (decoys).
Lost a few over teal season from calling the shots with ducks in the decoys.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

60% of the allure of duck hunting for me is working the birds and getting them feet down over the blocks. Shooting them is the other 40%. I rarely waterswat them, preferring to jump them up and shoot them back down if they land in the spread. Kids and new hunters are a completely different story. They get first dibs at sitting birds.

That's the beauty of our country. You're free to have your opinion, I'm free to have mine. Long as we all follow the rules, no harm no fowl (see what I did there?)
