So been looking at getting a week long hunting trip together for next year hunting some TPWD private but public land up in the panhandle around Lockney. Have any of you ever hunted these areas and what should one expect. They have had lots of rain over this past year in that area and if same holds true for next year it could be pretty good, I think.

Plainview was okay when I was a kid. Most of the feeder crops were replaced with cotton. Couple that with the drought in past years and it may be tough. I think there was some land up by Spearman or Canadian at one time. If I were flying blind I'd start there. Hunting pheasants on public land with a bigger group may be a bit frustrating. Those birds are a tough racket in those parts now days. I'd drive to liberal and hunt some walk in areas if it were me.

If you're talking about the TPWD type 2 hunting areas, I have hunted almost all of them. The better ones are in Floyd county north of Floydada. They are ok and you might see 0-5 birds per location. There is just too much cotton in that area and not enough grain or grass. Year before last I walked all day at some private places I usually crane hunt around Lockney and didn't see a single bird. Could be better this year, I'm not sure.

I am talking about Type 2 areas, I will for sure check out the Floydada one. Thanks for your help, there are also a few outfitters in that area may do a day with one of them.

I recommend Payton Estes with Texas Panhandle Pheasant Hunts out of Silverton. I guided a few hunts for him when he was in a pinch a few years back and he is a first class guy with fleet of first class dogs. Not to mention he has permission on just about every square inch of two counties out that way.

I actually already looked in to him and thinking that's what I was going to go with. Excited to hear positive things without asking about them.
