In all the latest Hunting Magazines, MPW, Cabelas and such, there's now fake corn cobs for sale. Just wondered what everyone thought about this, Gimmick, Ethical, or even legal? Lots of discussion and interests on other forums.

I personally believe its unethical and just wanted to get a feel for everyone else's thoughts. Bout the only time Id consider using fake corn is in a corn field but out on a lake or pond with no corn fields for miles around, nope.

Stupid and Gimmick. It is legal because baiting by definition the bait has to have nutritional value, but still stupid. If you can't get them to decoy with life like waterfowl decoys I don't think throwing a dozen plastic ears of corn out in the field are going to help you.

So some plastic fake food is unethical but a decoy rig that is powered by motors to swim half dozen deeks around, or one that has a few flying around in a circle is just fine...

My first thought. This "ethical" stuff gets annoying. Do you hunt? If yes then it's not ethical, period. Next question

I'm starting my own company. We're putting out a super-special line of high-quality lighters. How they work is, before every hunt you light a stack of $20s (not included) on fire, say the secret chant and dance that I've included and you're GUARANTEED to have more birds in your spread!

Seriously, it embarrasses me that hunters will actually buy into this kinda stuff.

I bet it would work if you put out enough of it.

To change the subject a little bit. Do y'all think ducks and geese find feed by sight or smell? or both?

IMO they've been around long enough to know what a corn, peanut, wheat field looks like. I would imagine fake corn would work with enough out there, but again my opinion you normally aren't hunting birds that are just in the air looking for a new spot to be....they've been in the area and know where food is. If you're in an old corn field that hasn't had corn in days/weeks, I feel like all the fake corn in the world won't get them to come to it. To me, it's like putting a duck decoy in a tree and hunting that in the middle of a field....they aren't that dumb smile In other words I'd spend money on better decoys over the fake corn.

But how do they initially know that there is feed in a certain field? Lots of combines are so efficient now there is almost 0 waste. You hardly ever see them land in a field, walk around, not find feed and go find a new field. They land in one and will sit there and eat for a long time (week or 2) until they eat it out or get shot out of it.

I personally think that it is a combination of both. When you drive by or in field full of milo or corn that has been laying on the ground for a little while it smells sweet, almost like popcorn. I've heard of people souring corn in buckets and drilling holes for ducks flying over to smell. Also heard of people sinking corn in burlap sacks. And surely if there is tons of waste grain on the ground and a big group of geese or ducks fly over 1 could see the grain and lead the rest of them in there.

I agree they can see the corn, but are we talking throwing a couple fake cobs within the decoys or we talking actually filling a field with them with no dekes and trying to keep the birds there? If you have decoys out, they are going to see the decoys from a helluva lot further away than corn. By the time they get close enough to see corn they should be within range, again my opinion. Ideally you'd want the birds in there already before you actually hunt the field, which if you do all those things in the above post, that would work better than a fake cob.

And this does not mean I agree with the above methods smile I would think that's baiting.

I would just hunt a field that has corn growing than go through the cost and effort of buying and putting out a bunch of stupid plastic corns you would never get back. A corn field wouldn't be my first choice of fields for duck hunting any how. Maybe deer hunting. I mean do they sell you a specialty cob carrier ? I would rather buy a roll out mat that looks like a flooded field, I think that may actually be valid during droughts.

It kinda reminds me of the plastic steaks and other toys for dogs that squeak. People are like o look Lassie wants his steak. That dog does not think thats a steak or it would eat it. The thing is made that way for the people not the dog. The dog jus tlike it cause it squeaks and doesn't get in trouble for playing with it.
