Does anybody believe that dogs learn better from another older dog that has been taught rights and wrongs? Does this save time and stop bad habbits before they start? Just wanted you guys opinion on this before I went thru with my thought of trying this out?

Absolutely! No question that a younger dog will learn from an older dog, but... it depends on what "rights and wrongs" you are referring to.

My older "mom" brit taught her daughter real quick what and how to "Honor" and she never passed her mother on point again. It only took once. On the other side she also taught her to be an escape artist, she had some very creative tricks to get out of a kennel.

Well if I wanted my dog to act like a wolf or a common pet,,, that may work??
If I wanted more from my dog,,, I'd be darn sure it didn't learn it from a dog..

What they usually end up doing is letting the old dog hunt and then they grab the bird...
Young dogs can be such sand baggers...LOL

This method works great with rabbit beagles. That is how we always trained new pups. With other types of dogs, I don't know, but I think it is all about what you are trying to accomplish as to weather it will work or not.

Funny you say that. My friends dog would wait for my dog to make teh long deep water retrieves as he would stand in the ankle deep water and would try to take the bird when she came back in. I don't think I ever saw that dog in water that he had to swim in even when he was older.

My younger male will try and do this all the time but he will try and beat her to it. if does not he will try and take it from her in the water or wait till they hit the land. I have been working with him hard. I will put him on a sit stay and then play fetch with my female in the back yard. I will play with her throw his ball and sticks. He hates it. He is getting better though. The problem I am having is I had them both fetching on the command "fetch". I am trying to change to their names so they do not get confused on which dog I want to retrieve. Hopefully I can have them both hunting with me and alternate retrieves. I wish I would have started both of them with the fetch command being their names instead of fetch.

I hadn't really thought about that, right now I have Miley responding to a good stern "GO" and it works great, but if I get another puppy after next season I guess I'll have to change it up.

Another thing to think about is that for most force fetched dogs "fetch" is a command, not a go word. I can walk my dog down the street and say fetch when I point to an empty water bottle or stick and she picks it up as fast as possible.
I use her name as the go word when she sees a mark fall and she goes out there to get it.
If you think you might ever force fetch your dog in the future don't use fetch for a go word and its probably a bad idea anyway because it would confuse a Force Fetched dog if you were working around it in a training situation with more than one dog.

I use the word fetch as a go word and fetch. I can point to anything and say fetch and they will pick it up. But it also is used to have them go and fetch. I guess I never realy thought about it any different. When you say "go" does she still fetch what ever you sent her to?
