Guys,
Based on what I've seen these things are extremely expensive. What is the least expensive option that is reliable. Also will these ever be more affordable?
Thanks,
Mel

The short answer is the Photon XT. Search for threads on the Photon XT, as there are any number of them and they discuss all of the peripheral issues.

Before you buy something, make sure your expectations are in line with what you're buying. Understand the difference between IR and Thermal (saw your post on the Thor Thermal Scope thread) at a minimum.

Deerhunter61, check on the THF for Bearclaw, they rent night vision scopes. Try before you buy.

Thanks,
Mel the xsight seems to have most of the bugs worked out, the important features seem to be working just fine now. I am also looking at the photon 4.6 as a second scope for my mini 30, got the xsight on the windham ar now and so far so good for accuracy/reticle centered etc.

In night vision and thermal, the saying "you get what you pay for" is very true. I have played with many different set ups. The "cheapest" and one of the best I have found is the FLIR RS series thermal scopes. I run a FLIR RS32 on my blk out, and it is VERY effective. I, personally, do not like to "hunt" with night vision. I like thermal much better. NV is great for seeing in the dark, but has it's challenges for hunting.

Couldn't agree more with "You get what you pay for". Thermal is something special, but pricey!! I hunt with NV and for my situation of night hunting it fits perfect and was less than 4K. I'm able to detect targets well out to 700 yards and engage at greater distances than I'm comfortable trying. Normally I limit my shot distance to 200 yards or less, however I could easily push that to 350 - But for me that's a little careless just because I want to be able to find the pigs.

So if your in the DFW area and have a place to hunt hogs, pm me and you can try out a N750 and a Resolute Night Scope along with my $800 Flir handheld for free!
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

I can say the Photon is a good entry level digiscope.
Thermal as a scope is ok for larger animals but from this last weekend you can have difficulty actually identifying smaller animals such as skunk/raccoon/opposum.
fox and larger don't seem to be as much of a problem so that may not matter to you. With the thermal scanner I could with some degree of accuracy tell that I was seeing a skunk but with the N850 it was a positive ID out past 170.
YMMV

With the thermal scanner... I think there's your problem. What thermal scanner (model/resolution/native magnification) are you using?

Thermal has a learning curve to it. A cheaper, lower res, lower mag monocular is harder to ID with at any distance. You learn to pay close attention to the movements of what you have detected in order to help identify it, i.e., a skunk walks different than a coon. On the other hand, a monocular with higher res and higher mag allows you to both detect and ID at much greater distance.
Some folks like lower mag on a monocular for scanning because they feel they can scan a larger area faster...and that is true. While higher mag does take a bit longer to scan the same area, you learn to cover ground fast and will see stuff you miss with a lower mag.
I own a Pulsar HD38 and an ATN OTIS-X 6X monocular. Given the choice, I hardly ever touch the HD38. I have been working with a new group of users lately...introducing them to thermal. After trying them both out, not one chooses the lower mag HD38. They all want the mag.
You miss so much with digital or NV.
I've used all of it extensively...and like Chad above, my preference is always going to be thermal over anything else, period. I know DNS feels the same way. Each of us, uses a different manufacturer/product, but thermal is imperative.

Sorry, but yessir, in the scheme of things it is. There are only a couple I am thinking of right now that are cheaper. If that is what you were using, then I agree with you about telling the difference in small animals at distances of 170 yards and more.
