I asked this question a while back and got all sorts of colorful replies. Until Saturday, I had never seen anything other than birds eat it. This picture was taken in a burn spot we burned last March. There are deer tracks all through the ash and sand and all the Polk Salad in this one spot is eaten down. This is the only spot on my place that I found this. I don't know if the ash made it taste better or what. I just thought it was interesting. Thanks!! Matt

Absolutely. A friend has 600 acres in Pert. Those east Texas deer hammer that stuff.

I'm surprised the deer in East Texas get any Poke, Mama sent me out to get it for dinner. We ate it when we could find it, it's good.

Keep dogs away from the plant, toxic to dogs. The leaves are edible for humans and deer alike. The berries make a great cover scent, in my opinion. I mash the berries under my boots in my ground blind.

Poke Sallet http://www.pokesalletfestival.com/When humans eat poke, it was only in the early spring, and then only if it was boiled a few times. Once it grows bigger into the summer, it's too poisonous. I can't say for sure, but I'd vote that it's not a deer food in the summer or fall.

My grandmother used to cook it for us when I was a kid. She'd par-boil it and scramble it with eggs. But I had never seen deer eat it before. Much less attack it like they did this patch. As for not eating it in the summer and fall, this pic was taken Saturday 10/3 and there was a TON of fresh tracks all around it. I'd say they are still eating it. Thanks for all the input!! Matt

I stick with my Indian Corn. You should see the deer when they find it. They will look, and look, and as soon as they start eating it thay won't leave until it is all gone.
I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.
