A buck crosses the food plot that I am hunting. It is obviously dragging one of it's front legs, but moving at a good rate of speed. I shoot it and as I am cleaning the buck two guys walk up and say that they have been trailing a wounded buck. So, where do you go from there.

They wounded it and it ran off, and you killed it. Easy decision, there.

Wait this really happen?
If it crossed onto your property they are trespassing if they don't have permission.
If it is a deer you shot because you didn't want it to suffer I would consider letting them keep it if they wanted it. If it was a deer I shot because I wanted to shoot it id probably keep it.
Either way id probably want to lecture about crossing property lines without permission etc.
It's hell eatin em live

Legally you should have placed your tag on it before you started cleaning. So at this point it's on your property and you finished it off so it's technically your buck.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.

Show them their bullet placement ask them their thoughts... I'd ask them also whom they got permission from to cross the fence.

Your deer, no two ways about it. As mentioned earlier, your tag is on it, can't take that back.

Yes, they crossed a fence without permission to be on the property, but that is another issue. Thank you for all of your opinion on this situation.

I wanted to keep it, however it was a barely legal buck and one of the guys was about 14 and he said it was his first buck. So, I said this to the adult, " you have a choice, take me to where you shot the buck and there is blood on the ground and if it is on your side of the fence, I'll give it to you. If it is on my side of the fence I'll call the game warden." He walked me over and there was a small amount of blood right at the fence about 300 yards away, but it was on his side of the fence, so. I gave it to him, however, I gave the 14 year old my card with my phone number on it and said before he ever crossed the fence again, to call me and ask permission. And I was wrong as I had not tagged the buck before I started cleaning it. My pin was in my truck to fill out the tag.

Why would you want a deer some else wounded. What if the shoe was on the other foot?

You STILL need to record this kill on back of YOUR license, and the appropriate tag is burned. You can STILL receive a ticket/fine for not completing this above ASAP!! Good job on giving the buck to the kiddo; shoulda accompanied with a WRD (wildlife resource document), and all would be 100% legal (including your burned tag above)

My thought Don, you don't get to put a tag on a deer for wounding it, only for killing it. No disrespect meant at all and I can see your point of view.

You did good by letting them prove they had shot and wounded it,and mainly allowing the young hunter to get his first deer. But I wouldn't have posted here about the tagging part. Too many hardnose people here!!!

We don't need the internet game wardens giving this guy hell about not burning a tag on the deer. The bottom line is a deer was killed, a tag was executed, and the situation was handled. It also sounds like a solid understanding was communicated between neighbors. I think the OP handled it just fine. If a game warden actually writes a ticket for that, he's a jerk.

Yeah, don't listen to me. I'm just an idiot.
Lol. Duckbill that was funny! The dude up top has already taken lots of bone before this deer, both mule and whitetail.

Reminds me of the range wars.... Possesion is 9/10ths of the law... Ethic's tis key word... Were i was born & raised... When shooting an animal, ya take best ethical shot possible... Target & live shooting two different things... Some times heart lung shot drop in tracks, same hit, have seen deer & hog run good distance... Yes its always nice ta ask permission before crossing fence... Is it ethical if deer jumps fence like in this thread, ta let wounded animal suffer? You said yourself, obviously dragging one of its front leg ... First thing would have done.. Check deer see what type wound... Blood trail, follow it back, could been poacher.. As you stated, two hunters clamed they been tracking... Would have walked back ta fence with the two, & checked evidence... Personaly think they were being ethical... Good thread... Good points... If theyed a walked away, cause it jumped fence, & didnt try recovering, & you werent their, & found it fead later... Some people would have put thread about un ethical hunter shooting deer & not following up... Twas a thread bout that year ago... It's like old range wars, cattle crosing anothers fence....

Yeah, I hate it when the game wardens uphold the law that hunters failed to follow.

You did exactly the right thing - adult should know better to cross a fence but he youth learned a very valuable life lesson

If I got a ticket for every time I did not do something exactly by the law I would either be broke or in jail. I can not believe some of you and your hollier than thou thinking.
