Had the craziest encounter with a coyote this afternoon. He walked out into the opposite edge of my food plot about 30 minutes after I had began working it. I had just finished putting out 50 pounds of seed and had turned off the ATV to put fertilizer into the spreader. After walking out, he just stood there and watched me for a few seconds and didn't even run off after I yelled at him. He couldn't have been more than 50 yards away and just walked off with no more fear than what you would have expected from a dog. Of course, I didn't have so much as a pea shooter with me.
Definitely a coyote. Gave me a bit of a scare no doubt.

Does not compute.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Had a yote come up to about 15 ft of me one day. I was sitting on a rock working on a nice piece of flint with a hammerstone and he had to check and see where the noise was coming from. He looked at me for about 20 seconds and then circled down wind and walked off.

In my case, it just seemed wierd that a coyote would show up with so much noise and human activity going on. I had been running back and forth over the food plot for some time, spreading seed and had just turned the ATV off to start filling the spreader with fertilizer. I've never been one to carry a gun every time I hit the woods, but the incident makes me understand clearly why some guys do. It tests the nerves a bit when you have such an encounter and realize you have nothing but a cell phone for help should you need it.

I've seen yote's follow a shredder around the field trying to catch rat's and rabbit's.

It is very common this time of the year for coyotes to check out our activity when we are working in fields or food plots.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Maybe the coyote thought that since you were working the field, you might plow it up. Lots of times when there is activity like this, coyotes are active working the mice that are uncovered in the grass in the field. I guess this would be a coyote's version of a drive thru window food service.

This is the reason I try to have either a sidearm or my AR with me at all times. Finding the leftovers of a $200 lamb (that could eventually even be a $1500 stud ram) will really stick in your craw. I've seen a couple of coyotes on our place in the last two years that were just out and about in the middle of the day and neither time was I ready. NO MAS!

Always have a shotgun or .22 in the truck and my 9mm on me. Never know what I'll run into out in the back of our property. In the past it's been: Pigs, a rottweiler, bobcat, a mesican digging up/stealing my chili petin plants.... you get the picture.

Never seen one act like that, he's been hand fed by somebody I think. I've had them walk up and check me out then stroll of like said. I swear they only pull that when I'm not holding a gun.

I've been uncomfortable around coyotes 3 times in my life:
1. I didn't know my buddy had dumped a gut pile about 50 yards from my stand right off the only road back to camp and right as I started climbing out at dark, they went crazy. There was a large pack of them on it, but I never got to see how many because the first hint of my flashlight in their direction and they vanished like a fart in the wind.
2. A coyote in the brush was very obviously trying to lure my dog in and it finally succeeded. I was about 150 yards behind him by the time he vanished into the tall grass at a woods line, and I was certain he was being ambushed by the pack and would be dead by the time I got there. But nope, he came right back out, tail wagging just as I got there.
3. I was out running at night and was a good ways off the beaten path when a large pack of yotes started sounding off and were clearly headed directly towards me. They got closer and closer to the point it was so loud it almost hurt my ears and I was weighing my options between climbing a tree and jumping in a pond when I guess they scented me and again, instant silence. Must have been chasing a rabbit or something.
Lone coyotes never scare me, because in Texas, they're just not big. There's no way one could drag down a full grown man on its own. You could stomp it to death. I guess rabies could be a threat.

Could have a little dog in him. Could also be the remote area where my food plot is located. He seemed as surprised to see me as I did him. And we both weren't sure if the other was a threat.

Maybe it was an old Indian spirit warning you to get off his land.
How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

Maybe it was an old Indian spirit warning you to get off his land. Funny you should mention that. My great-grandfather was full-blooded Choctaw. I kidded the wife it was a spirit of my ancestors. She replied, "I thought it had to be a wolf."

If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

They can't tell difference between actual work done - just hear the motor going back and forth.
