Day Temp. 65-88. Sunny... nice cool breeze. 5 a.m. Guide early today with new glasses. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.......I give up. I just Picked up a new T-Shirt “Got Food, I’ll Eat it”. Morning game plan....spend from 6 to 6:40 working my way quietly through the dark to the prime location. Oh so slowly I worked my way. As NASA says Mission Accomplished. How do I know , as I sat down I surprised the church mouse. Nice morning, game spotted... Yes..... just not the game I’m after. The animals never new I was there all morning.... not even the wily gray fox 20 yards off my right side. His presence however did get noticed by the other game animals. HUNTER 1 .... FOX 0 As the morning sun hit 9:00 am the Wind began to pick up from the North... I Text guide and he agreed.... time for some spot and stalk. We would make our way along a tree line keeping the sun on our right, remaining in the shade, with the wind in our face. As with all hunts “at any one-second” your luck can change. WOW!!! My guide spotted the “Holy Grail” ......golden horns glowing in the morning sun....distance 250 yards ... my hunting instincts took over......best shooting position? standing, knelling, sitting?.....sitting immediately selected. Cross hairs carefully steadied on the game. Everything feels good...... now just waiting for a slight turn of his head to expose the vitals. Set trigger, set ....control breathing.... patience... Instead of a slight head turn he made a full body turn. Giving me a head on chest shot. I adjust the Cross hairs, now animal resets his chin to the lower position. Blocking the vitals once again. Then as quick as he was spotted he begins walking straight towards me "in line" with one of his bedded running mates. Now closing distance to 200. All of a sudden Up jumps his running mate who takes off to our left at full speed. I believe he thought a fight was coming his way and was getting out of dodge. The target animal now takes off after his buddy with an instant 90 degree turn and burst of speed. Offering me only a short window running shot. Needless to say not a shot of comfort therefore past. As quickly as the hunting gods smiled they frowned. So ended the morning. However the memory of this great animal will be another hunting memory I will carry with me forever. Now what should we due. The once regular game cam model stopped the photo session the morning of my first hunting day. 0-3 Word of the day: Standfast.Tomorrow morning will be my last chance. So we will stay with the plan because in the morning if he shows it could be a 1-4 "winner" If not then the pursuit will be continued until the next time I "Slip out of the man cave".

If you hadn't said "golden" horns I'd have bet money it was blackbuck based on the behavior you posted.

Yeah I know. But BB are the only thing other than elk species that are exhibiting that behavior around here now.

Day 4..... All is good....No all is Great. 10:00 pm. turn off light... time to sleep.... Can’t sleep because I keep trying to analysis the last 3 days. Start doubting plan. However my guide and I discussed various details. Now don’t get me wrong the guide is the boss, but together our 100 years of combined hunting experience is an asset. Besides we both love to “just talk hunting”. Check phone alarm set...5:00 am now it’s 10.50. Word of the night TRUST.5:00 am.....time to wake up however remember all the eating.... now it hits bottom.... I mean hits bottom. 5:25 check pack for an (extra) roll. CK. Breakfast who cares..... 6:00 am I begin my last morning walk through the dark to the prime sitting location. Guide wishes me luck and off I go. Arrive 6:42 . Temp 55. Put on my light jacket. My spirt is alive. No matter how the day unfolds I am blessed. Now this part of the story takes an unusual twist. I’m sitting in silence slowing moving my eyes and head left then right.... right then left. Checking each bush, tree, cactus just to make sure it’s as it appears. You know when that bush looks just like the game animal you are after then you slowing raise your binoculars to see a “bush”. Check time 7:20. The next 15 minutes I don’t remember. I instantly fell asleep. Now usually I nod and nod... fighting to stay awake. I just plain “fell asleep” just a calmly as taking my next breath. Then my eyes open and I raise my head and standing 75 yards in front of me was the ‘Holy Grail” and 5 brothers. I'm in shock. Not to shocked to slowly raise my 30-06. Slide off the safety with the utmost in care. No sound. I set the rear trigger and place the cross hairs between his shoulder blades. As he once again is facing me head on but this time his head is down feeding. I touch the trigger and the silence is broken. The magnificent old warrior drops in his tracks. I sit there in disbelief. Still in shock I keep the animal in the cross hairs. No movement. A few minutes later I compose myself and decide to text my guide..... no I'll call...... no I'll text..... Oh what the hell I'm calling. He can hear the excitement in my voice as I say “I got him” His reply is emotional. Only a response two fellow hunters can feel. In about 15 minutes he rounds the corner in the ranch truck and I can hear his yell, not only one. We sound like a couple of children.... Yes Diana..... on Christmas morning. Pictures to follow. Yes a picture will be worth a thousand words. Pure Mouflon: 38 1/2 x 39Ranch: Priour Guide: John Huber

Diana,
Thanks
I never thought it would unfold the way it did. When John text me "I have spotted the ram" last Sunday I was loaded and on my way Tuesday morning. Other Hunters had tried but for me to have taken this ram is very special. The 5 brothers he runs with , one was an 'OLD" former leader but now has 2 broken stumps for head gear. Another brother is missing 10" on each side. Each old battle warriors in their on right. 6 mature pure mouflon rams running together is a challenge.
For example I'll give a little more detail. When we spotted them on day 3. 2 rams were bedded down facing East. 500 yards to their right were 2 rams facing West. In the middle of the end scouts sat 2 rams one facing North and the other facing South. They were prepared.
