I arrived in Kerrville on Thursday about noon and arranged to meet Billy my guide to hunt that evening. The property in Waring is right along the Guadalupe River. The first night we hunted a power line with small open fields to the right and left. you could see about 300 yards down the power line and about 150 yards to the right and about the same in places to the left but brush limited it to 100 yds mostly. The first night, we had over a dozen whitetails come in, mostly bucks and one axis doe. There were some pretty decent hill country bucks in the group. The next morning we sat in the same blind it was more of the same except Billy left the blind and spotted some axis in down the power line behind the blind. There were four does about a quarter mile away. Billy said he saw a buck go into the woods before I got out of the blind. The second evening we sat in the bottom where the axis were in the morning. The popup blind was set up where you could see about a hundred yards along the bottom and about twenty five yards wide. We got a crowd of whitetails and one button buck axis. The next morning we sat in the blind on the power line again. This time things started slower but the whitetails started to drift in then a little late billy says there's an axis buck. He then tells me it's about 26 in., is it big enough?, by the time I replied it was it had stepped into the woods. There was also a doe and a velvet buck I wasn't interested in, that stopped, and gave me a perfect broadside shot. It had been previously decided that if I wasn't successful that I would move to the Concho County ranch in Eden. (to be continued)

We got to the ranch about 4pm. We had some communications problems do to my coverage being dropped for some reason by ATT. If all of a sudden you can't call someone turn your phone off and back on to reestablish your connection. After arriving at the ranch we got into a JD side by side and cruised around the ranch. We saw lots of axis and fallow along with Bert and Ernie, two blackbucks,
that always hang out together. Cody has two impressive fallow bucks one chocolate and one spotted, the spotted one has gotten into the whitetail side and should be pretty difficult hunt. The axis were having no part of cooperating with us on the side by side so Cody dropped me off at a blind and was going to walk slowly towards me in hopes of pushing them past me. Sitting by myself was a mistake, I should be able to differentiate between a spotted fallow and an axis but I didn't and shot a goofy horned little fallow. I won't try to explain it I screwed up. I did make a good shot and dropped him in his tracks.

You made a good shot and are happy and that is all that counts.

how old was he. maybe the pictures are misleading, but he looks like a medium aged fallow with weak antlers.

Was this a guided hunt?

I was in the blind alone the guide was making a slow walk towrds me to push the deer past. I will not make the same mistake again, after looking at some pictures, I have the vision of what a fallows's tail looks like burned in my memory.
