Hey guys, I am still getting my feet wet taking care of this axis herd. I am slowly going through and thinning out the culls and working on the right amount of deer for the ranch. This guy has me curious. Why is he so dark and his spots so washed out? His coloration is much different than the rest of the animals on the property. To me he looks really old. I see him all the time and none of the other bucks will mess with him and he is usually alone on camera. They are rutting pretty hard right now and he shows no signs of going after any of the does. I just wanted opinions. What do yall think?

no idea on the coloration, but he looks to be around 3 yrs old to me, maybe 2 he doesnt seem to have the body mass i have seen on older axis, even when their antlers are in decline
but its hard to gauge from one picture
Stuff my dad said in the deer blind
"I can dive deeper and come up drier" "did you do that?"

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the input. I'm new to the axis game and am thankful for the advice. It's definitely not going to hurt me to give him an extra year and see what he does. Thanks yall!

I was told older axis will have a lot of black on the face..
