I'm not trying to start a question about the ethics of hog hunting with subs, but would like to know what's the effective range? I'm considering a 208 grain Amax from Beck, but would like any first hand experience you guys have on effective range. Also, do you take neck/heads shots only with subs, or do you shoot in the vitals?

I like to shoot them within 100 yards and I prefer to ear hole them, at pigs I'd take longer shots but not comfortable doing it on game animals over 100.

My buddy shot an Auodad with my rifle at 200

150 grain bullets

I have shot a bunch of sub 208 amax subs using my old remington 700 the bullet is not going to expand, it may tumble if you are lucky. So if you must do it take ear shots you are basically sticking them with a .308 caliber stick. I use mie for quiet target practice and squirrels. Even squirrels will run sometimes if not a head shot.

I was considering using AMAX bullets for hunting since they gave me such great accuracy. I called Hornady Tech Support and was told, rather emphatically, that "the AMAX is not a bullet we recommend for hunting since its expansion characteristics are quite unpredictable!" I know lots of folks have used them successfully for hunting, but since there are so many other bullets that are "purpose designed" for proper, controlled expansion in game animals, I have elected not to use them for anything but paper punching.

Not many if any bullets that expand going subsonic. If I am wrong here please let me know so I can purchase some. I have killed plenty hogs with subsonic ammo from 110 grain hornandy vmax, 110 grn round nose, 150 grn spire point, 170 grain hollow point, 190 hpbt. All will kill hogs as long as you know the drop and distance shot with each one.

Outlaw state and Lehigh defense make some sub expanding bullets. But you are still better off shooting supersonic. Even shooting subsonic the bullet impact on the hog is loud, if they do not hear the rifle report they will hear the impact.

I have dropped plenty with sub rounds, 147,150,165,180,220,and my favorite is a hard cast 240 grain lead they do tumble out of my 722 in 308. Out past 100 yards they will only "pattern" not group.
Yes the "myth" of shooting quiet, was blown first hog I hit the "smack" sent them running.
