Only harvested 2 in north Texas the last 20+ years- both mallards.
Have friends that have hunted for a LONG time that don't have any....
...be interesting to see how many Banded birds have been taken by fellow THFers- include area (north south east or west) and state!
Include average number of days you hunt per year

One band. Gadwall. In Southern New Mexico in 2011. This year will be my 17th season. I just sent the band to the BBL to see if they can get the info from it. It was extremely worn which is why I waited so long. But it being first first and only to date I really would like the info on it. Plus knowing the rarity of a banded gadwall.
I usually get out 30-40 times/season. The last 2 seasons I only got in about 15 hunts each

I hunted 30 days a season from 2000-2007 in central Kansas. 4 bands, all greenheads.
Hunted 15 days a season from 2007-2012 in n tex and about 50 hunts a year the last 2 years here. 0 bands

Yeah I think the warmer weather of the last several years may have caused a less significant southern migration. Also, not sure how they do it, but I'm guessing a large number of yearling birds are banded, most near their nesting habitat. I'm guessing a lot of those dumb 1 year birds get knocked off up north.

Luck, luck, luck, and more luck. My oldest son doesn't hunt ducks much. I'd say he's shot 30 birds/yard or last 4 years. 120 ish total. 1 redhead, 1 blue wing.
I've had 2 first time hunters shoot bands in my blind and was with my friends son on his first two hunts and he got 2 bands. Pintail and gadwall.
I've got 75 ish and have been duck hunting for 35 years. I'd say 50+ days/year. With 2003-2014 running 80-90 days/year. Number counts went way up when I started hunting brant geese.

It's not rocket science. We shoot the wrong species in most of TX to get high numbers of bands. Your likely hood of shooting banded bird is related to species. Most banded: mallard, blue wing, etc. The changes in Ag practices combined with all of the planted/flooded food north of texas has stopped the mallards north of here. I keep a log book and have watched the mallards stop coming here. In 96 we shot over 800 mallards in Centex. 98-600, 99-250. 2002 until current we have not shot more than 60 in a season.
My buddies in NY/DE are disappointed if they don't shoot at least 8/10 year/man on the Canada geese up there.

It's not luck, it's magical. Any time you shoot a ban, it means the duck gods sprinkled some magical dust on your morning. I shot 2 bands including today, the first time was 2007 hunted solo thanksgiving morning, saw one bird all morning long...

Been duck hunting 30 years and have 2 bands. 1 snow goose band and 1 honker band both shot in CA when I lived there! Zero duck bands and hunt atleast 2-3 days a week during the season. Even go to Canada every year for a week and never got a band up there.

Just one so far, first season I started hunting geese, last day of the season 2006. I almost exclusively hunt ducks about 35+ times per season and don't have a single banded duck.

8 years, 1 band. Banded Pintail in south Texas on the coast. First shot fired on opening morning in 2011. 150ish birds per year on average. I usually bunt 4-5 days a week, sometimes more.

This year will be my 40th season. I have killed a little over 1,000 birds in that time and taken four bands. Hard to say how many days/year I hunt as two cruises and 23 years in the Navy and Navy Reserves limited my hunting many years. I have taken only one banded bird (a Mallard drake) in Texas in 2005. The other three are a neat story: I took a Wood Duck in 1991, a double-banded Mallard in 1993 and a banded Black Duck in 1994 - all three drakes. The neat thing is I killed them all on a small beaver pond in northern Mississippi and they all fell dead inside the same 30-foot circle. Guess you could say the hole was a band magnet. Sadly that hole was dry last time I was there.

I'd have to look at some notes to see how many days hunted. I have three bands from two birds. Started duck hunting in '06 -'07. 1st banded bird (double banded Redhead hen) shot in '10 - '11 season (11-28-10). Bird was banded 08-13-09 in Cochin, SK, CA... 2nd banded bird (plasticine-filled banded Gadwall drake) shot in '12 - '13 season (11-03-12). Bird was banded 07-14-07 in Baldwin, ND... Still holding out for a banded dove.

I've been duck/goose hunting for 25 years, mostly goose hunting though. I have probably had about 20 bands shot. I claimed 6 of them. I have 2 bwt, 2 snow geese, one ross and one canada. I have seen banded specks, canadas, blues, ross, and snows harvested. Two of the birds had reward bands. One canada with a $100 and one snow with a $10. I think 5 of the geese also had neck collars. Two snows, two ross and one blue. I would tell you it takes about 300 geese to get a band on average but you never know. I hunted for 6 or 7 years and never saw a band and then shot two in four weeks. I always thougt it would make a great waterfowl book to document stories of banded birds. They all seem to have great stories. Mine do. My collared ross goose got me a spot in Wildfowl in the Passages section, at least that's what I think it is called.

Killed a banded mallard drake on my first ever duck hunt in '94 or '95, Platter, OK. Haven't killed or seen one killed since.

Don't remember my first band but my last one was last duck of season in 2014- I was hunting w a friend and it was real slow- sent him to the south west side of lake to keep birds stirred up. About 10 minutes after he got moved his lay down blind- I shot the bird.

I'm one of those that don't have any harvest ed banded birds success stories. Ive never even seen one killed on a hunt with me.
On the other hand, I've banded several thousand birds. Just can't connect with them during hunting season.
Just a couple days ago in west central Texas, a family friend shot one of the bw teal our crew banded in August up in Canada. that was neat.
Lots of blue winged teal have been getting banded last few years. Target them if you want bands in Texas.

My one and only band was taken last fall in North Dakota. A gorgeous 3 ring mallard that I just got back from the taxi last week. Only bird on my wall. Been hunting MN & ND my whole life until I moved down here last summer. Couldn't tell ya how many days a year I hunt but I usually get 100-150 a year. He was banded in South Dakota & shot 20 miles south of the Canadian border
