Working at the lease yesterday afternoon, Matagorda county, saw a hard horn buck standing over a doe. Watched them for a few minutes then the doe got up and ran off, few seconds later the buck was hot on her tail. Seems a bit early for rut activity.

I believe some of the coastal counties have an incredibly early rut.

There's some good research on the topic -- although a lot of it is older -- and it all pretty much confirms that the rut happens at exactly the same time each year. Most of the variance is by county.

Here's TPWD:

There is a subspecies of WT think it's called the coastal prairie not positive that rut a good month earlier than their relatives.. I think it's the first week of October so very likley your seeing pre rut signs..

I killed a doe the last Saturday of doe season in Mills county that had two very large fetus in her. No doubt in my mind they'd have been born before April 1st. So yeah, it happens.

Matagorda Island deer rut in Late Aug through first half of Sept.

Every year.

Not out of realm of possibility that some mainland deer in the area are starting too.

I have seen Aransaa Wildlife Refuge deer rutting in late September. Near Austwell

All the brazoria co deer rut hardest the first 2 weeks of sept.

All the theory on hours of sunlight determining rut timing, is BS.

The deer in the coastal plains rut early. Hunted in Refugio county for about 5 years and the peak of rutting activity seemed to be mid to late October.
