Tree is dead, and you can see the bark seperating from the main core of the tree. I'd say it's a woodpecker that is burrowing into the tree. The hole is too clean to be a gunshot. What I think too. Looking under bark on weak, dying trees. Yep looking for food! ^^^I think I found the guys shooting up your trees

My guess would be porcupine. Porcupines tend to start eating at the top of the tree where the growth is new and tender.
