When hunting at night with digital NV do you prefer neck, head or vitals? I've missed two pigs recently taking head shots, and wondering about changing to neck or vitals. I'm shooting6.8 120 grain SSTs.

Triangle jaw to ear to front of shoulder - place bullet in center of that triangle.

It's not technically a headshot more of a CNS shot

Center of the neck just in front of the shoulder. Good video and picture here http://www.lonestarboars.com/threads/where-to-shoot-hogs-for-a-clean-kill.2/

Yes these are all good but you can also never go wrong with the vitals. Also a hog can not handle a gut shot as well as other animals. So could work also.

hit them in the front shoulder if you're not sure, break that leg/shoulder

if bullet didn't disintegrate it'll penetrate the vitals and shock the spine

I always try for a ear shot, in the head for sure. I'm in the river bottoms, shoulder or vital shots means going into the thick stuff to get it out. My elk load 300 Wtby 180 Barnes triple shock thru the shoulders left a very angry animal until he expired. I don't like chasing a wounded pig, so I like head shots. 300 BO sub/supers,6.5 TCU,308 sub-sonic,6.5x.284, and 10mm Glock. All have done made DRT pigs.

The ear and neck always work for me. I try not to take shoulder shots until they start running.

First option- Head shot, ear shot if you have a good rest and calm pig
Second option- neck area if slightly moving or not 100% steady
Third option- Shoulder shot on a moving pig with not the best rest
Fourth and final option- Anywhere you can after option 1, 2 or 3 have been used!

If your shooting a round like a .243 and above put it on the shoulder and break um down.. If smaller round put it through the lungs.. It won't go far.. Head shots are dumb miss a little each way and pig is gone.. Get a bullet in them somewere that's gona kill it.. Who cares if you don't find it.. Saves you the trouble of loading and dumping it

If broadside or quartering I shoot for cns just in front of shoulder. Sometimes if facing me square I will wait for the hog to lower the head to eat and go for base of skull shot. Both shot locations allow for a little miss in any direction and still hit with a basically lethal hit.

Head, just below the ear or neck (CNS), depending on how things line up. I never take a shoulder shot these days. Take out the brain or blow up the spine, they got no wheels.

Neck or head for sure. Shooting forward of the shoulder gives you a large target and almost assures a central nervous system hit.

Seen lots of shoulder shot pigs motor-scooter into the bush using hind legs only. I don't know how they do it, but they can go quite a ways with no shoulders, lungs or heart.

As you can see, for any problem with (n) responders, there are at least (n+1) solutions offered.

Here's my 2¢ worth:

First choice, a head shot just behind the eye. However, I take this shot VERY rarely because the target is small and the head is usually moving. I only attempt this when the hog is still, very close, and I have a good shooting rest.

Second choice, neck shot. Draw a line from the eye to the top of the shoulder and shoot anywhere on that line.

Third choice, shoulder shot. Draw a line up the front leg, and aim about one-third up from the bottom of the body. Alternately, a shot above the shoulder that hits the spine is very effective. The shoulder is probably the most common point of aim for me because it provides the largest target area and it's very effective at putting a hog down. I hate tracking them into the brush . . .

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

I know if you're shooting a 243 don't shoot a boar in the shoulder. When we were kids my brother shot a boar in the shoulder with a 243, knew it was hit, found a little blood. Dad tracked it into the brush and shot it in the head with a 7-08. When we were skinning it we found the bullet between the armor and the shoulder. Didn't do more than bruise the meat. For me and my kids we shoot for the head or neck unless we know its a sow or small boar or when they're running I'll just throw lead as best as possible.

If you're shooting a small caliber, fast moving bullet ie. .243, .223 the neck shot is the ticket.
The hydraulic effect of bullet impact in the soft , compressible tissue will raise the blood pressure in the jugular vein to the level of a complete and fatal full body stroke.
No tracking required!
