Me and a couple of buddies want to go to Argentina next year to shoot some dove birds. We are hoping to streamline the guide process here. Any help, insight or past experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I have been to Miles& Miles twice and Las Chanares once. Either one is really good. But, I likes Las Chanares better. The food and the service was a little better, and the drives to the fields were very short. That is a really big factor that you need to ask about whenever you are talking to your outfitter. Most places have really long drives to the fields. 10 guys in a 1 ton van for a 45 minute drive on crappy roads is no fun. One other thing I should mention. Do NOT go down there on a budget. Shells are going to be your biggest expense. I have seen people go down on a budget, and when they blow their daily budget on the morning hunt, they are sitting at the lodge when everyone else is going hunting. If you are worried about your shell bill, save your money and go next year, you will have more fun.

We hunted with TGB Outfitting on a combo bird/big game hunt last spring. It was awesome.

You can visit with them directly at the Dallas Safari Convention this January, along with several other Argentine operations. TGB took care of all the paperwork for us, but I recommend that you rent your guns ($100/day) there rather than deal with the hassle at the airports. The cost of ammo will be your biggest expense by far, and renting will save the wear and tear on your own shotguns.

You'll fly into the international airport in Buenos Aires (EZE), then you'll be escorted across the city (2-hr drive) to the local airport (DuBerry) for your flight out of Buenos Aires. At EZE we had to go through the gun check-in with RENAR (their TSA) where no one spoke English. Then at DuBerry the process was repeated again....in Spanish. Luckily, I know just enough Spanish to get by, but each step took over an hour. Then lastly, at the little airport at Santa Rosa in La Pampa our guns and papers were checked for the third time. And when it was time to return to the US, the three airports do it all again. It wouldn't hurt to plan a stay at a Buenos Aires hotel to allow for delays.

Interestingly, this month's issue of The Hunting Report has an article on gun permit costs and transit through Argentina. This article also recommends that shooters rent their guns, at least until Argentina straightens out the import process.

SYC Sporting is who i would recommend. We went down there in August and hunted with them, the trip was incredible. The best part is that the fields are only about a 20 minute drive so we would go out in the morning and hunt then be back at the lodge around 12:00 eat lunch, take a nap or catch some tv then back out around 3:00. Believe me, that is enough hunting time !
