So, the other day I was headed out to dove hunt at a place and in route about 1/2 mile away I see a ton of hogs in a field, how do you guys go about finding out who owns the land to see if you can get permission to hunt them if you see them? I tried the plat route but hard to find the correct map. Thanks

I went down to the tax once and inquired about a land owner. They gave me telephone number and address. May be worth a try.

As a landowner and if it were me you were calling, I would say if you asked to meet with me somewhere in person and talk about hunting then you would stand a better chance of getting to hunt it. I would expect you to reference people I may know that can vouch for your character. Other than that a random phone call and asking straight up to hunt my place would probably result in a hang-up. I don't expect you to bring me anything, gifts or anything like that. Approach me in a business manner and we can talk.

I agree with you 100% Curtis, I was trying to find who owned it since as you know it could be someone that doesnt live near by. That is my intent to locate the owner and go talk to them, just needed a start as far as finding the owners name and a possible contact number. I have now found the owner of the land and cannot find a number so I will need to stop by and talk. Thanks for your insite.

Hmm, if the owner is in the city, kind of like the guy that owns the 200 ac behind my house, a letter is what I had to do. I scheduled a time to meet him the next time he was out my way or stated I could meet him in San Antonio. I had to drive to San Antonio for his convenience but it was well worth it. The matter was concerning the fence on our property lines that we share. I brought pictures of what I was talking about and a few maps printed out from Google Maps to show what I was talking about. We had a quick lunch and it was well worth it. Turns out he is a retired law enforcement officer and it was well worth the effort to meet him in person.

The office where tax records are kept may not be the same as that of the County Clerk. But of course, the Clerk's office will let you know if such is the case.

Also, tax records will only tell you who has been laying the taxes, which may not be the owner if it's "heir land" that has not been probated. Still, whoever pays the taxes is a good place to start.

The "tax office" for Houston County where I hunt is nowhere close to the Court House. They have a PC with special software that includes maps of the area that show property lines and the names and telephone numbers of those who are paying the taxes. If you're good with a map, you should have no problem figuring it out.

I started a similar-type thread in the Upland game bird forum. I am planning (haven't done yet) on getting a platt map of the hunting area of interest and going from there. I am curious why the platt map didn't work for you? Does this map contain property owners and addresses? As you can tell I am very new to this.

I live on my ranch and I've never heard of the fellow that was listed as the owner. I have the deed records for my land since Texas became Texas and the listed name isn't any part of the record history.

My neighbor's ranches are wrong as well.

I would be very careful of paying the $30 to unlock it.

I just have a card for my GPS unit. I don't use it to find names. I just noticed the names are on there. Never bothered to check the accuracy of that.

Pending on the county on how good the plats are, i had to check a bunch of different ones to get where I needed , I did find the address and name of who owns it, no phone number or anything but it is a start in the right direction.
