My lab was limping just a little after this morning hunt but it wasn't enough that it concerned me. We left home about 3 and just got back.

Her paw is now very swollen and she will not put pressure on it.

Bite?
Sprain?

Have you looked for any marks/holes? She could have gotten poked by something.

Swollen paw has never "just fixed itself" with my dog, and it has been about 3 times. Always something pokes between her pad underneith, gunk gets in there, and swelling does not go away until gunk is cleared. Not good, call me if you want to talk about it, pm sent....

Thanks. I went ahead and took her into an emergency vet clinic. Good news. Not a snake bite. Possibly infected thorn or something like that. She'll be ok.

Don't take ok for an answer. Make sure all gunk is cleared from hole in pad, if they say they do do see anything, then they did not find the gunk in there. You will just be back in there later tonight if they do not clear out all the gunk in her paw.

Those emergency clincs do not know about hunting dogs and gunk getting in the paw pad. Best of luck.

My buddy's lab had same issue 2 weeks ago. Could be dry strike, or twisted in hole. Take dog to vet and get it drained if doesn't go down in a day or 2. 13yr old lab is well now. She had shallow breathing- we thought she was done

He did a pretty thorough exam of her paw. I did as well. Can't really find a wound or gunk or anything. He seemed pretty confident. She's on antibiotics now. If it's not better in a day or two I'll take her back.

I just looked at it some more. Pad is red and has some pockets of fluid between toes. The vet did mention that as well. Not really noticing "gunk".

If you find the entry point you can squeeze out the funk and clean it real good.

It takes some digging for the vet to get in there. It can be just very small piece of moss/mud that got inside the pad, from a small thorn hole. If not gotten out the first time, and in a timely fashion, it normally requires 1) vets goes back in there and gets it out and 2) a hole is left in the pad so it can drain, and normally reqires flushing for days.

Last time it happened to my dog, vet told me she looked and did not find anything, and I knew she just did not look hard enough, and sure enough a was back in there a few hours later because the swelling got worse and worse.

Swelling might have slightly gone down.

She still has a good bit of drainage coming from the underside of her paw. I have really tried to find an entry point or a hole but can't really find one.

Here are some photos of the most swollen area where she is having the pus come out. Before and after I cleaned it a bit.

The area where the drainage is coming from is more than likely your point of concern.

Thorn or barb wire wound I'd bet. Any mesquite where you were hunting?

Yes, it is very red just can't find an actual entry point.

Lots of mesquite
Likely stuck one in it. I hope it all came out. Dad broke one off in the ball joint of his foot. Swollen up every time we went quail hunting. Doctor would not cut it out. It finally dissolved about 20 years later and quit swelling.

When I said "pad" in my earlier posts, I really mean the webbing between the pads, that's where the issues was with my dog, 3 times it has happened. Get your dogs foot, and spread open the webbing between the pads, and look hard a hole with puss coming out. If puss is coming oilut of that hole, I can almost assure you something is in there. Vet will need to go in there and get it out. I would for sure take do to your normal vet in the morning, and the vet needs to find whatever it is that is in there. If they find a hole in the webbing, and they say "we could not find anything in there", I would not take that for an answer.

More often than not, there isn't anything in there. An open, draining lesion is nature' s way of trying to clear contamination from a wound. Mesquite thorns are notorious for causing this sort of trouble, and they usually don't break off inside the paw IME. But they often cause infection and a draining tract. Usually, a thorough flushing followed by a course of oral antibiotics will do the trick.

That said, I remember a springer spaniel years ago that came in with a draining forepaw and a severe limp. We sedated the dog and probed the draining tract. We pulled a rusty nail nearly 3 inches long out of its foot that was entirely buried and invisible from the outside.

My bet is a mesquite thorn, has happened to my lab 2-3 times.

I was able to dig it out once but had to let the vet do it the others.

Swelling has gone down some and she's starting to walk on it. Hopefully it keeps getting better and then stays that way.
