Put the newly built mud motor on the water for its first test. Pushed me along at 20mph, which is more than I was expecting since my buddy has the same boat with a 9.9 outboard and maxes out at about 16-17.

Boat is a old town sportsmaster, 15'6 x 44" wide, engine is a harbor freight predator 6.5 hp with the kit from mudmotorkit.com. I didn't really want to go the kit route but I bought it from a buddy for 100 bucks so I figured it was worth a shot. The whole rig cost me lest than 1k. That's including the brand new engine I swapped out on the motor kit.

Full pic of the boat the first time I took it on the water before I got this motor.

Since then I've taken off the 3/8" plywood transom and replaced it with 3/4" on both sides, all the way to the bottom, not just half way down like before, in the process of putting my red/green/white light and bilge pump and other little things I may need.

Be careful!!!! And I say this because I have sunk a boat. Waiting for one more bird lol. Pay attention to forecasts and be aware of wind and where you have to get back to. Looks like fun and enjoy the heck out of it but take the phrase "better safe than sorry" to heart. Safe hunting!

Trust me I know the limits, any wind or bad weather and it'll stay home while I walk in lol. Actually after owning 4 or 5 john boats, this one is more stable than all of them, even the 1648 I had.

I've got a sps longtail with a predator 212 motor on a 12 ft Alumacraft. It's not fast or big but it gets me into some skinny water.

Sweet man, im about to do the same build pretty much. Its going to pushing a 1648. I was thinking about the 13 horse predator from HF and a beaver dam longtail kit. It'll be right about a grand
