Do you guys ever see trophy bucks jump into a penned feeder area? I ask this because big bucks at my lease in Jack County will not come to any feeder unless there is a hot doe in the area. I personally don't hunt a feeder during archery season and I see bigger bucks that way. I think the bigger bucks in this County tend to shy away from the feeders. What are your thoughts? (I have no pen around my feeder)

Have seen 5 year old bucks in my feeder pens but those pens have been there over 6 years so they never knew then not to have a pen around them. The first few years 2 and 3 year old bucks would go in the pen but not the older guys.

Those older bucks will some times hit a feeder but not regularly except late summer and sometimes very close to the end of season and some become real regulars starting about mid January

We've seen several different age classes inside the pen throughout the summer, but not sure what will happen once the season and rut approaches. 1ST year on the place

Pens put up with feeders in summer/fall of 2012. Pictures taken of mature bucks from that point till last year in Dec.

I've only seen does and small bucks at my feeder. The bigger bucks like to go to my mineral lick outside the feeder, but they are nothing like in the pictures posted. A buck like those probably doesn't exist in my area. Last year I started using Deer Cain Black Magic and it's been amazing. The go for that over corn every day!!!!

On our place, we have mature deer that eat in the pen and under feeders. I learned over the years that they prefer a chum pile outside of the pen more than eating in the pen though. I keep the feeder going, but will put a couple of corn piles about 20-30 yards away and they will move around. They seem to feel more comfortable also.

Good luck up

For the first 3 years we had our property we didn't shoot any deer. We had several mature deer show up on cameras in years 3, 4, and 5. After year 5 I think they started catching on that bad things happen under feeders and they started avoiding them. We still see them from time to time at feeders, just not near as frequently. And that was with no pen around them.

Like txshntr, we see many more mature deer on corned roads and random chum piles.

One thing I have learned with mature bucks and feeder pens is they have to be raised jumping/eating out of the pen. I also never shoot a deer inside a feed pen. I always corn with the road feeder in areas around or close to the feeder. I shoot deer in those areas. The road feeder is great for putting deer where your wind will not effect you and placing deer where your get your best shot from your blind.

Two mature bucks in a feed pen. One eating under a corn feeder and one eating at a timered protein feeder.

cheers coolpics bang a lot tougher working on this tiny android, rofl it can be like a hemorrhoid in the astroids... scratch think ihave the right pic's, 6th & 8th one's down... Here its been 1buck county, basicly since moved here... Have seen several times deer just like those in the picture's... were i was born & raised yagh bout your tags for pudding food in freezer ta later grill... Dont have penned feeder's use trail cam's ta monitor for when hogs folllow creek & hit the feeders, food plots, & mineral licks... Just few years ago, had a younger buck like in second pic, if i did it right #8 on yours, not expert like ya'll, just going by neck size. Was checking cam at bow stanf when seen a doe, go behind tree, then eaded around ta see young buck, in full velvet, high, tall tines, main beams out sde equal ta ears , so guessing 12-13" spread. They just started the 4deer & 13" here.. That year opening day, seen old buck like one in first pic, walk right in front of deer stand, last few sec of legal light, like the buck in first pic, #6 on your post. It didnt turn its head for straight on comfurmation... Next day, thinking it same buck steeed out of food plot by creek, grabbed camera ta video, thinking a doe.. Zoomed in, it was legal mature deer just like in pic, got video of it, before getting rifle it eased out of sight.. Some times the derr wins.... neather of those deers were seen on cams that year... Every hunter on here has different hunting stories... Different income ... As pappy once said: not evety one pays the same, some people can pic out their own lobsters,, other eat at MacDonalds ... i got cheap posts.. flag

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Wow OK I'm a believer now but I have been on the same lease for 25 years and only once saw a mature buck come to the feeder and he didn't eat any corn. There was a hot doe at the feeder. I also have never used a feeder pen. I have heard for years that Jack County is heavily pressured and I believe it. Everyone around us shoots every weekend through out the whole season.

The pressure is high in Jack, but there are other areas that see the same amount of pressure and don't have the deer habits that some areas of that county do. I have only hunted Jack a few times, but the deer movement was different. Had much better luck between stands, on chum piles and locating alternate, natural food sources. Whether it is true or not, they seem to have been trained to avoid feeders and stands.

I have always wondered about this...why not shoot them in the pen?

So, you like to educate them that it isn't safe out of the pen or on a chum pile instead?

Feeder is the 24/7/365, road feeder is there for only a small portion of the year and moves constantly around. Think about the difference in what I just said.

Hes got enough deer were plenty are around while one would be shot... just like a feeder baby that grows up eating protein... that feeder baby would be thinking different if its mama got popped at breakfast
