So if you recall a couple weeks ago I went out to set up a camera and ended up shooting a wild hog with my AR-15. It was a direct hit and the hog went down; but between the less-than-ideal .223 cartridge and my poor bullet choice it wasn't enough and the hog got up and ran away as I was looking to shoot a second hog. No exit wound, no blood. Whatever.

Anyways...yesterday I went back out to retrieve pictures from the camera and this time took my Mosin Nagant loaded with some 150gr Hornady SST. A higher power must be looking out for me because AGAIN, a group of hogs came trotting out into the open where I was at...just as I stood up and was about to walk out. So I shot a big one from about 35-40 yards away with dedushka and the hog dropped like a bag of concrete and never got back up. This was the first time I've taken the ruski out...74 years old and still killin.

Sure is nice to shoot a pig with an old open site rifle.

Retired U. S. Army, which means I still have to work to make a living.

Yes it is!...It just feels right. And a lot easier to tote around than my scoped rig.

Isn't that illegal to shoot them with a rifle that old and no scope? cheers

Yeah, are you allowed to use a rifle that's older than you are?

Oh wait, I've killed a dozen hogs or so with a .303 Enfield . . .

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

I'm a lot more comfortable with rear blade sights instead of the ghost ring peep type.

303 Enfield...nice! My Mosin was made in 1942. I really want an M1 Garand someday since both my Grandfathers carried them; one in WWII and the other in Korea.

LOL.

Good shooting with your Mosin Nagant. This rifle was made to kill, and it does it well. A million dead Germans can't be wrong. up

Got one of those myself and the thing is an absolute tack driver! Been thinking about sporterizing it with an Arch Angel stock.

I have done several of those in the last few months. The old 91/30 with a shortend and re-crowned barrel, Timney trigger, in an Archangel stock with a Rock Solid scope mount is some pretty stout juju. There are several other options though, including a trigger job that I do that will drop a stock trigger down to mere ounces.

Gotta love that 7.62x54 cartridge. Makes me regret having to sell my old Mosin.

My youngest Son's first rifle is a Mosin that I bought for him for his birthday years ago.
He was playing some video game and used a Mosin in the game and had to have one.
Even today, it's the first rifle he grabs when we go daytime pig hunting.

Pick up a nice Mosin for under 200.00 and a spam can of ammo for under 100.00 and that's a lot of hog hunting for little money.

Cheers,

Best gun for the money right now. They are ugly but they sure shoot with the cheap surplus. My 1943 PU sniper loves the 147 gr. silver tipped Bulgarian. $110 for 440 rds is cheap fun! Just have to clean the barrel since its corrosive.

Awesome! Nothing like an old warbird like that to put meat on the table!

Here are two of mine I took down with my M1 Carbine and Enfield No.5.
