This was my first true concerted effort at planting some food plots. I decided to tackle 3 areas for a total of 2.5 acres. I tried different seeds in different areas to see what goes well. As usual, tractors crapped out, equipment broke, implements were bent, PTO shaft pins rusted up, etc. (maybe that's why I rarely try this...). That said, I overcame the issues and forged ahead.

Here's hoping that the rain this weekend really happens and hits my plots. I'm in Hopkins County and just trying to give our resident deer a little something to keep them on our land and provide some nutrition.

What all did you plant? We did one Saturday & there's a decent chance of rain Wednesday.. C'mon rain!

Looks like you've got some moisture in the soil already, and the grasses are greened up.
But then again I'm in South Texas so I'm used to the dust bowl effect.

I will wait for this rain to soften the soil and disc a few more times, will have mine in in a week or 2.

I have my land plowed and ready to plant. Not planting till it cools off a bit and we get some more rain on my plots. Later I wait less chance of army worms getting my plots. I am looking at mid October for my planting date.

You are ahead of me. I sprayed mine with roundup Saturday and will wait two weeks for everything to die, then disk and plant the middle to end of the month. It's still too hot for planting

Same plan here, except I'll plant early if there's a lot of rain in the forecast the first of October

I did the exact same thing on a ranch I owned in Central Texas a few years back - I enjoyed the disc and planting - it is a crapshoot. The other issue is that even if you get rain and the plants come up the deer hammer it before it can grow - IMO food plots are the number one way to grow big deer but it takes a lot of money and time to do it right. Keep us updated on how it turns out - I am jealous that you are trying this - it is good fun

I've yet to spray but plan to do it this week.

The key is planting not just before a rain, but after the summer weather pattern changes and frontal rains begin. Plant too early and you lose seed that will never germinate even if it gets a late rain. Early to mid October seems to work best for me. Besides, the deer really don't start hitting plots well until later in the season after the acorns are gone and frost has bitten back the browse. We just try to make the season arrive a little earlier, at least in our minds, by planting early.

Same here! Grounds so hard we need a bit of rain to be able to break it good.

Rain is here today, so I'm probably right on schedule to disk either this weekend or next week. Looks like the temps are about to break too. I'm not seeing anything in the forecast for anything in the high 90's like we have been having. I'll probably plant the weekend of the 19th if all goes well.

got mine in the ground yesterday... half an inch rain the other day made things easy and now more is coming for the next two days... ill replant in October also

We have 7 plots.. and 2,000lbs of wheat to plant this weekend!

We bottom plowed 5 weeks ago.
Then tandem disked them 2 weeks ago and we had decent moisture content then. With this little rain we are going in early. We will re-disc , spike harrow , broadcast and drag again.

we do pretty well early as long as there is good moisture in the soil before hand. I may take some pics and try to figure out tho photo thing on here.
