My kinfolk and I arrived in Craig last Friday around 5pm and set up camp on public land. Saturday morning we were on the mountain side for the start of our 7 day hunt. Hunting was good most of the week with some close calls but no shot opportunities. I stayed positive all week and was excited to be able to be experiencing my first elk hunt. As our final hunt approached my buddy who lives in Craig asked me to hunt with him in the morning. I agreed and the next morning we started our 45 minute mountain climb to the top of his favorite mountain. We neared the top and he stopped me and said "your bull awaits you up there" I chuckled and kept pushing to the top. We made it to the spot he wanted to set up at and settled in. He tells me to get comfortable and goes to set up a decoy about 40 yards away to our right. He comes back and says let's do this. We wait a few minutes and he starts cow calling. We immediately have several bulls bugling with two of them very close to us. He continues to call and the rest is a blur. He calls several more times and a bull is headed our way. Several bugles lets us know he is quickly approaching. In a matter of seconds we see birds fly off and see the top of his antlers. One more bugle in our face (my heart rate is through the roof at this point) and my buddy with a cracking voice says "draw now". I follow his instruction and in a couple seconds we have a bull toping the mountain making a bee line to our decoy. I put my top pin on him as he's moving through my shooting lane at 15 yds and squeeze my release. My beman arrow hits him making a complete pass thru double lung shot. He runs about 20 yds and stops looking back in our direction and that's when I see the damage from the slick trick. He begins to slowly walk away and makes his way behind some brush and out of our view. We give him 45 minutes and head over to recover my arrow and begin the search. It was a short search as he made just out of our view and expired about 50 yards away. Recovering such an amazing animal was an incredible feeling. We took some pictures and high fived and then started the quartering process. We called for backup and had the bull quartered by the time they made it to the top and started my journey down the mountain. An hour later I was at camp completely exhausted but on a high I can't explain. An amazing experience.

Early in the week my cousin put an arrow through this cow at 36 yds for her first bow kill.
