Has anybody hunted the public lands around Lubbock for dove? I just got my catalog and was looking at some of the options and wondered what others' experiences have been. Are they covered up in people or can you have a good time and not be sitting on top of other hunters?

There is some public opportunity in the Lubbock area. Get your book and do some scouting, that's only way to know for sure. My son goes to Tech and he found a few places last year so I know there out there. Good luck.

I always found that the public land lots changed quite a bit from year to year up there but if you can find one with water you should do well.

When I was up there the public land was worthless for dove. It is easy to get permission to hunt private land up there, though, so I would start knocking on doors!

My buddies dad did that a few years ago. Then one day the landowner showed up! Lady renting his house was making $50 a hunter. Lol.

That is all we used to do. Never had any problem finding a few awesome spots every year to dove hunt. All the grain fields close to Lubbock will probably be leased up but anything further than about 15-20 miles from Lubbock you should have a good chance of getting permission on it.

There's 4 properties north of town near Idalou that are pretty good.

There was some good hunting up in Floydada when I was up there. The ducks and crane hunting tended to be better than dove. It was hit or miss depending on how much rain, and if the palya lakes were full. Should be good hunting this year.

I've heard of a place west of Abernathy that is public land. Never been though.

My son shot 12 this morning on public. So they are in the area.

Wow; I am impressed! Most of the doves I have seen are in my back yard or flying over it. Did he say if he saw any teal?

That perks my interest also. I was going to skip the APH this year but I may reconsider.

That place in Abernathy is usually pretty packed when I drive by to go to my place. And most of the guys sit right there on corner next to the highway.

Most of the farmers want mind if you ask. Just knock on doors and ask.
The teals are starting to show up. I have permission on 3 lakes that already have 20+ bluewings on them. Looking like a fantastic teal season.
