Can anyone suggest a good plan to try and get permission from landowners to hunt their property for quail? I have pinpointed an area where there are quail, but not sure how to properly get in touch. My current idea is to drive down to the area and find the nearest house (such as a farm house) and start knocking on doors? Can I find general property ownership info online so I am better prepared? Any other suggestions, first-hand experience?

Not that I know of.
Talking to the landowner face to face is all that ever worked for me.
Knock on the door.

I always had a gift of some kind in hand too.
Be prepared to hear a no even with the gift but sometimes they say ok.

I second that, knock on the door. You can also get names and addresses from the county tax roll online.

Appraisal district for that county can give you the landowners name and usually the address. Send a letter or look up in the phone book.

It will have cattle if it has quail in Texas. There will be a gate if it has cattle. Put a note on the gate, asking if you can run your bird dog in the pasture. Never mention hunting.

I wouldn't think that would work nearly as well as just knocking on the door, shaking his hand, and shootin him straight, "good afternoon, I was wondering if I could quail hunt your place."

I've always gotten just 3 responses, nope while he closes the door, how much money we talking for the lease?, or he'll say yes after he tells you to pick up all empties, shut the gates, and don't bring people without permission.

EVERY TIME I'VE ASKED A LAND OWNER IF I COULD HUNT I GET ONE OF THESE THREE RESPONSES:
"NO"
"I'LL LEASE THE HUNTING TO YOU."
OR " YES YOU CAN HUNT, PICK UP YOUR TRASH AND DON'T BRING PEOPLE WITHOUT ASKING."

Fixed it

I just wrote what worked for me a couple of times. I've always had a place near home to run dogs.

I am going to try that Bill, some nice open fields near me that would be too good to pass up.

There is not always a home to knock on so a note makes sense.

The place I hunt quail on now, is the same place I got permission to run my dogs on 4 years ago. I never asked to hunt the quail on it. I was just happy having a place to run the dogs on wild birds. After a few months of running them, the land owner got to know me better, and he brought up the subject.

^ I like that approach... iv gained more than a few hog hunting property's by simply keeping an eye on cattle or tossing a few hay bales here or there

If you are looking to hunt free good luck .

If you are willing to pay something go talk to the USDA FSA (Farm Services Agency)
They know all the land that is in crp. Some of it is small plots that you can lease for low $$.

Another possibility talk to the folks at local feed stores.

If you get a face to face meeting, tell the landowner you are careful about gates, won't rut roads, & will call him if you see stock in need of attention or fences down and that you will pick up any trash you see.

This. Find out who is paying the taxes. If you drive out there, you just may find out the LO lives somewhere else, even in another state.
That's how we got this one place we hunt. The LO had died and his daughters inherited the land. Got the phone number to one of the sisters and called her. One lived in Maine, one in North Carolina and one was still in Texas. Another property we got, LO lives in Ok. Got permission all by phone.
