Taking a little trip to Montgomery later this week and was wondering if there is any must thing to see or eat. I'll be coming from Jarrell to college station and going thru Navasota, Stoneham. Plantersville. Any information would be appreciated.

I'd have chimed in if I knew of any place to eat in Montgomery. There are a couple of places there, and with more money having moved into the area, food quality should be much improved. There is a BBQ joint a bit east of Montgomery that was very good the last time I went there. I can't remember the name. It was on the north side of 105.

If you want seriously good food and don't mind driving a bit further, cruise on into The Woodlands. You can go in the back way from Montgomery. I forget the roads involved. I worked there for 12 or so years, and love the food options. If you have womenfolk with you, go to the Black Walnut. Salads, sandwiches, fantastic. Then there are 3 to 5 good steakhouses. Landry's Seafood. PF Chang's for Americanized Chinese. Just too many good places to include in this. I have to mention Palotta's for Italian. If you like Chicken Alfredo, they have an Alfredo sauce they call Pavia. Seems to have lemon juice in it. Fabulous. If it sounds like I miss The Woodlands and my expense account, you are soooooo right.

And then there's Plantersville....I think you can get a sandwich at the Shell station. Navasota has a decent steak place (Western somethingorother) that's right on Hwy 6. They have a very good salad bar. Food is decent, or a bit better than decent. And Popeye's fried chicken and Subway are in Navasota, right there on Hwy 6.

And, further down 105 is Conroe. Pretty good food there. Some great BBQ. Nothing really special though. Not that I can remember.

As for a gun store, I'm thinking, but can't come up with much. I think there's one or two in Conroe, but I used to go south on I45 from The Woodlands to Carter's Country on Treshwig Road. Now that's a gun store.

Don't stop in Plantersville...

Phil's Road House and Grill has been very good. I've gone once or twice a year, at least, since they opened. Chicken fried steak is pretty good and the Caesar side salad is almost a meal in itself. You can't go wrong with Burger Fresh, either. Both are on Liberty St./149, Phil's is a block south of 105, Burger Fresh is just a bit north on the west side.

There is a really neat little gun shop run out of a cabin in a guy's back yard, called Gun Runner (373 Catpaw Trl, Montgomery, TX 77316, (936) 597-5195). You might give him a call before dropping by, though. He has a lot of old rifles and pistols, and is a really nice guy.
