I have a1995 Polaris 300 2x4. Had ran great for years. It set for a while in a barn and now it won't start. I am getting fuel and spark. I have cleaned carb. I have fresh gas. I have checked compression. It turns over great but won't start. Any ideas on what I should do next. Thank you

I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

Have you tried starting fluid, or even try pouring a little gas down the carb...

You need to pull the carb out, pull out the jet, the needle valve, and the float. Soak them over night in a can with Chemtool. Then clean them and dry them with compressed air the next day. If the inside of the carb is gummed up then you may have to soak everything, but don't soak rubber gaskets.

You can get fuel and spark all day long, but if it's not making through the jet then it will never start. Look at the end of the carb that goes into the motor, see if it's dry.

I cleaned the carb. Then tried to start it. It will turn over but won't start. Checked plug and it was wet with fuel. Checked for spark again and it was strong.

I have a carb rebuild kit coming just in case.

I checked the kill switch and it is good.

I am stumped.

Also I cleaned a very similar 4-wheeler up for my FIL about a year ago he wanted to sell. The float in the carb had deteriorated and was coming apart. You could clean it put together adj it run it around for a bit and then it wouldn't idle. Yank it back apart and it was all stoped up with little bits of float again.

We had this issue on an older Polaris once. Tried everything listed and it ended up being in the electrical wiring. Had to replace the whole wiring harness and it solved the problem.

Make sure that your manual on/off switch on the handlebar is in the right position to start. I thought I had a problem on my older Polaris one time until I found the switch out of position. Also, I have better luck after a long down time with mine to go ahead and hook up the jumper cables from the truck. If you can get it spinning faster, it helps sometimes. Your problem sounds like more of an electrical issue to me.

I rebuilt the carb and still just turns over. The plug is wet after trying to start. Just turns over without starting.

Redchevy I didn't take anything you said as mean. I appreciate the help.

Bigpig I may just bring it to ya cause I am stumped and want to get it running.

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

Here's an update. I didn't check compression right. The rings were seized up. Put new top end on and runs like a new one. Cranks every time.

Glad you got it going.

If someone had just taken the time before storing it, to remove the spark plug, put a couple squirts of engine oil into the open spark plug hole, and turned the engine over a couple times before reinstalling the spark plug, you wouldn't have needed to go through so much trouble. Not only does to help keep the piston rings from seizing to the piston, it keeps the valve stems from seizing as well.

But I bet you already knew that. cheers
