My brother, dad and myself recently bought some land we are planning to turn into a family retreat/hunting lease. We would like to put a small pier and beam cabin on the property and I was wondering if anybody on here had any plans they had used or any sites they recommended....?

about how big are you thinking? do you have access to water & electricity? sewage? and how simple of a plan are you looking for?

Me my dad and brother built one two years ago and we didn't use plans just built what we wanted. Had the guy at the local lumber yard draw up a floor plan and make a material list but that was about it.

I know where I'm staying when I need a place! That's nice.

Walter, y'all's place is simply beautiful. Mook, no formal plan's here, but we'll be looking at this in the near future.

Honestly, been checking/looking at Tuff Shed's and Morgan building's. Probably start with a shell, and build it out the way we want in time.

STXRanchman lived in a very nice Morgan cabin, before building his barndominium. If he doesn't post up, a quick search will show you pic's of his.

Congrat's on the land purchase.

Also on the plans. I would skip that part. We found set of plans we wanted and they sold them to us for 1200 bucks. But the plans were only a floor plan and did not include a material list or any scale drawings. Basically useless. So we got our money back. Where is your land located?

Look up Morgan Cabins. They have several floor plans on the cabins they sell.

there are free-ware programs available, or cheap/inexpensive available that are very simple to use that you can play around with to layout various floor plans to come up with an idea of arrangement. Some can even go a bit farther with 3D representation including walk thru ... some even give some basic materials build list. I used one called #D Home Architect.

Sweet. Ours started as a 'cabin' then morphed into a 3 BR 2 bath home/lodge. No plans, just read books and looked at other peoples stuff. It is an addiction. Never learned how to post pics or I would. Good luck.

Make sure no critters can get under the cabin.

If you are talking about a simple small cabin have you thought about a SIP design, (structural insulated panels). You can build the equivalent of a Yeti cooler for a cabin.

For concept drawings google sketchup is a great simple 3d drawing tool. The basic version is a free download, and it is pretty easy to use. It's not going to help with material list any more than drawing something out old school on paper, but you can get a concept of what you want as a starting point.

I had Atlas come out and build me a 20'x40' with rear 10' loft a front 8' loft and a 8' covered porch. Barn style, 8' sidewalls and 1' eaves.
3 days and $22,000 was all it took.
They came out to Avinger, Tx to do it.

Beautiful cabins, guys. We didn't have any plans either. 2x6 floor joists set on concrete blocks with concreted footings at 12" on center, 3/4 decking with 3/4 hardwood floors, that's important, don't use laminate if you can help it. The hardwood really beefs up the floor. 16 foot tall great room for deer heads. Hardi-board siding with a Mueller metal roof (CF panels). Just put some thought into things and put them on paper first. Also, if using window unit a/c, don't put them down low and in a window. Consider putting them up high as possible, in their own dedicated hole in the wall. Once again, it's like playing chess. You need to be thinking about your next moves ahead of time. Good luck and congratulations on your 'new' land. up
