As already said, forget the axe and get a maul, and while you're at it pick up a cheap bastard file to touch up the edge as needed. You don't want it "sharp as an axe," because it'll get dull real quick. Just sharp enough to feel the drag of your thumbprint across it is plenty.

^^Yup. ^^
Knives get 20-25 degree angle, axe 30 degee, you can go more obtuse than that on a splitting maul. Make the edges come together in a straight line like any other blade.

Splitting tip: On larger pieces (about 10" and over in diameter) don't go for the center on the first swing. Split all around the outside first on really big pieces, or you can do a split on one side, then the other, basically halving the piece of wood, then split each half as wanted. Otherwise you'll run the risk of damaging your handle down by the head.

[quote=GUTIT] Gutit I'm curious which chainsaw you recommend. I've got a good amount of post oaks on my place I need to thin out. I deal with Stihl here at work but haven't been impressed with parts and pricing. Have a couple home job chainsaws and you are constantly having to adjust the chain tension on them.
