Anyone hunt in Mexico on a lease have time to answer a few questions for me?
I am thinking about getting a lease down there.
What is the process to get get guns across with ammo?
What about hunting license?
How is the "situation" right now?

Any concerns I should know about?

Just hug your wife and kids and tell them goodbye every time you go across is the only advice I can give you. I won't go across, but that is me. There are guys who cross to hunt and have for many years without any issues. I won't and never will.

Have two good friends with Leases there, They have landing strips and fly in and I think that makes a difference. But as STX stated its rolling the Dice...some Toads there, but they have a staff that fills the feeders and maintains the hunting operations and they are VERY low key on mingling with the locals or discussing the private life with the staff.

I have friends that have a lease about 1 hour across the border. They don't seem to have many problems to speak of. They try to get me to get on the lease every year but I just can't bring myself to do it. When you enter a country where you have to carry some cash in your pocket to bribe the police you know you shouldn't be there. They kill BIG deer every year though.

I don't even go into Laredo anymore. Is a big Deer worth more than your safety?

Just like on this side of the border, not every place has big deer.

People say this but there are areas in every city that should be avoided.

You say you avoid Laredo but I bet I wouldn't see you hanging out on cherry street or in 5th ward in Houston either

Hell just driving down the highway at night in la salle, McMullen or Dimmit counties you are taking your life in your own hands

Mexico is kind of like South Texas. Just mention South Texas and the first thing hunters think is big bucks. There are areas of South Texas that just don't produce either. I guess my buddies got lucky. First year on their lease and they all broke 170 and have done it every year since.

Some other question I would ask are- why is there an opening on the lease now? Why is that person(s) getting of the lease?

I can take you to places in frio, mcmullen and dimmitt that will never break much over 150

South Texas was hyped up over the years greatly

The outfitter I am talking to has a few places. Some with openings others with the whole place available. I have talked with current and past hunters and no one had anything bad to say. The lease I am talking to him about they don't take anything les than a 160" trophy.

I hunted in Mexico for several years. Loved hunting Mexico but haven't been back since 2009, just not worth it for me. I have friends that have hunted there 20 years with little to no issues other than the $50 bribe here and there.

We leased 10K acres between Eagle Pass and Laredo on the Rio, right off HWY 2 for 10 years. We got off in 2008. Used Humberto Galvan in Eagle Pass to get our guns across and licenses. We really like the place, never had an issue. Never broke 170, but we would see a big one every once in awhile while driving around. I'm not going back, unless its to Sonora for a big Mule Deer.

There's places I went in to years ago with you know what that I wouldn't go into with a AK47 now including Mexico. Go to Texas panhandle or north west Oklahoma and spend money and time for some big deer, WT and mulies and sleep with both eyes closed at night. rifle

I don't think that's an accurate comparison.

If your looking for trouble in Mexico, you will find it. There is no more danger hunting in Mexico as there is hunting in Wyoming for elk in grizzly bear country. I have had Grizzlies comes right up to the tent and smell around before the dogs ran em off. That's about as hairy as it gets.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

Seems like a terrible idea to me, but everyone's different. Personally, I would want to try and keep as much money in Texas as possible. flag
