Any of y'all shoot targets at your deer lease during the off season? I could get some 500 yard targets up but I am concerned it will scare the deer off.

Yes but not that far. We shoot many times at camp. It does not scare deer off though. I hunted my buddies place this year with a 1,000 yard range. I was hunting at the 800 yard marker out my blind window and saw plenty of deer. One giant hung up at 270 yards. It's all about pressure during the season. How many times have you had someone shoot 300 yards away at a hog 5 times and the deer don't even flinch???

I have shot at targets and had to let deer move by before taking a shot at 200 yards. They don't know.

I don't think the shooting bothers them. I was always afraid to dove hunt our tanks for fear of scaring deer away. we finally did it one Sept and had deer come to the tank during a lull in the action.

I target shoot out of my deer stand to my feeder every year before the season in October. I've never noticed it bothering any deer. I have just as many deer at the feed the night after I shoot as the night before according to my trail cameras.

Saw deer on my range three times in the last two months. And there is gun fire on my place 52 weeks a year.

I think the human activity bothers them far more than the shooting.

I think it should be limited to off season and in a safe, predetermined area.

No shooting at my place from Sept.1st until the end of deer season unless it's at a deer, hog, or predator.

^^^^^^ this

Shooting, especially on a regular basis in a set area, is far less disruptive than running around the lease filling feeders cutting trees ect.....

Last summer in San Antonio at the National Shooting Complex a doe and her fawn walked within 200 yards of the skeet field and laid down. All this while 100+ high school kids were competing in skeet. So I would tell you to enjoy your lease and practice your long range shooting. We do on our lease.

WE shoot on our rifle range year round.

I don't think shooting in the general area bothers deer at all, especially if it's a regular occurrence. I've often sat in the box stand indicated in the picture below and watched deer feeding on the plot while guys were banging away on the rifle range.

But there's a Big IF. If someone cranks up a 4-wheeler to check his targets the deer will skedaddle. We don't allow 4-wheelers on the range during the season.

That might work good at a shooting range but in Cass county where I used to be on a lease I was watching a group of deer in a green patch near a feeder and as soon as the shooting at camp started about 200 yards away they ran for cover. Not sure if the amount of road hunting caused it but they sure did haul a$$.

I have seen deer spook from dove hunters at over 800 yards away and seen them come into the pond that we were shooting at. Just because you are shooting and see deer doesn't mean that you didn't push others away. Heck, we were blowing up tannerite and had a doe and yearling come by at about 400 yards down range.

We shoot on our place in a designated area, but I wouldn't want the range to be set up near my stand and wouldn't feel confident hunting a stand that someone is shooting 3-400 yards away at targets. Our place is 10k acres, but I wouldn't like it, during deer season, if I was on a smaller place.

Not saying that it does scare them away though and with enough shooting, the deer will get accustomed to it. I used to hunt down around Proctor over some peanut fields. The ranchers would set off cannons in regular intervals to scare the deer away. While they could sure make me jump, the deer got pretty used to them and wouldn't even flinch. Step on a branch and they would run like the wind confused2

I would say "do what you feel comfortable with."

Because I never hear practice shooting from any of the neighboring landowners of my lease, I limit my practice shooting to the shooting range at Carter's Country.

Absolutely no target shooting during deer season on the places that I hunt. I do have a mock range on one of my places, but it is only for emergencies.

It will depend a lot on the individual deer herd and the amount of actual shooting at deer as to how they will react to shooting.

The change in human activity has does more than the shooting. The more time and activity we have at our place the less skittish are the deer. When the actual hunting starts they know it, but like the farmers pickup, they recognize it and don't pay as much attention to it, let a strange pickup show up and they might be gone for the day or weekend.

Bingo

Know one person that corned a corner at a muni gun range. He got 2 deer during one season. I pulled in one morning as he was leaving with a doe.

I blew through a few hundred .223 rounds and 5 lbs of tannerite Saturday afternoon and had 5-6 does watching the whole time.

Yes, but if it was November you probably would have had several mature bucks back in the cover that were scratching coming out off today's TTD list. Nearly every place has some resident dumb does/young deer. Not the ones most were after.

No way shooting during deer season doesn't affect the hunting.

As does all activity. I see a lot more deer (especially mature deer) when I go to my place by myself and walk everywhere. I am convinced just the noise of talking/house activity coupled with driving ATVs to hunt makes a big difference. The last 2 good bucks I have killed I have been alone.

I never see mature bucks anyway.

So I've got that going for me. Which is nice.

I was sitting in my blind at about 5 PM this year. When they set off a line of blasts in the Caliche pit about 600 yards away. I was thinking my hunt was over. Did not have anything better to do so I just sat it out. 20 minutes later the deer started showing up.

No shooting on my place from 9/1 to the end of the season. However, the anti hunting neighbors start shooting ever Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons during hunting season. I expect that it does bother the deer.

No 4 wheelers on days that hunting takes place. And yet, I expect that deer know when we are around.

I've been putting off building a shooting range because of this question. And, I've gathered all of the materials.

I have one private neighbor who leases to a couple of young guys who make all manner of racket. They hunt 60 acres. It is quiet everywhere else. I start seeing some good deer on my place I don't have on camera when they show up. Pretty sure they are doing me a favor.
