My 5.9 won't even start unless I have 9,999 lbs or less on the hitch

True, but what's it rated to pull 10k pounds max?

Exactly, it is a good solid old motor, but in todays market it competes with the ecoboost, not the 3/4 and 1 ton diesels.

That's funny and the goofiest thing I have ever heard, I use to haul 20k pounds plus of pipe, purlin, cows and hay with a one ton dulley. Today's market is about dealing with EPA, ultra low sulphur diesel and marketing. Pulling is factious number any way. It's all about how you set the trailer up and how much of the weight goes over the rear axle and how the tranny is made and geared to handle it.

I'm starting to wonder if you ever really used a truck.

Compete with the Eco boost...lol only if you don't have to go over 10miles loaded. Loved to see an Eco with 200k plus miles of pulling 15k pounds plus on it.

Im talking performance not longevity. The 12 valves un-modified are not performance oriented motors. They are not even in the same leage as modern diesels in power output. Ive put a couple miles on a 12 valve sure they run and they pull, but they don't have near the pep of the newer motors! You know that and you could argue the other side of it too.

Enquiring minds want to know... what transmission rear end and how far and fast did you pull it smile Is this like the guy with the chevy v-6 standard that pulled his gooseneck stock trailer 2 miles to the auction?

Red.. Pep wise your right. I will probably go to my grave still saying the old 12valve was the best deisel ever built, none of the new deisels can take a tenth of the abuse including old 12 HO. Ask me about my last three lol!! Tuned to high means go boom.

Why I agrue with you about the Eco in a 3/4 so much. I'd rather pull 20k with the 12v then my 6.7, 6.4 or 6.0

Lol, that old man was something else.

read my post earlier on miles. Owned a fencing/building supply company. Hauled pipe, and purlin all over the country durning the week for free stall barns, and hauled hay and cattle on the weekends. Old blue, think was a 93 model. Tranny was just the stock manual with the granny gear. Don't think I ever had the truck over 80mph unloaded.

Had one with 350k when I sold it.. Only work on it was rebuilt injectors at 300k. Guy that bought probably put another 200k on it

Wow, my gen2 doesn't even like to pull 6k. It's does ok on the bottom end but get it up to 50 and talk about flat line! My uncle used to pull a triple axle camper with it (I bought it from him) so maybe it's just plum work out now... My 2012 6.7 ford pulls pretty decent but my 2005 cummins pulled like a train.

After working for a dodge dealership I find some of these 6.7 fuel mileages a lil over the top most of our guys coming in raised hell about getting 11 or so miles to the gallon. On the other hand dodge claimed with programming they could take the 6.7 high output to 1000 hp. Just what the engineers claimed

It takes a lot more than just programming to get 1000 hp out of a 6.7 cummins. You can only push so much fuel and air through stock components, and the bottom end will grenade around 850-900, and that's on the high side. Your average is closer to the 750 hp range on the bottom end. When my 2011 is all said and done, I'm shooting for around 650 so I wont have to go internal, yet still stay reliable.

I am always on the look out for a pre 94 dodge with the 5.9. Used to drive one for work and it had the torque flite automatic. I would of rather had a standard but it did the job. When I left she was at 500k+ and we never did anything to her. She was always hooked up to a gooseneck and no less than 10k pounds. Not a speed demon but slow and steady won the race. I have since owned 3 24valve cummins and my favorite was the 04 CC 4x4 LWB with a manual. Got 20+ and she had plenty of pedal. My 2012 6.7 was nice but checking fence was not her cup of tea and I was hesitant to pull the emmission components due to warranty. Best one I have owned over all was my 2012 F250 CC 4x4 with the 6.7 power stroke. That truck was a beast.

I had a 2003 5.9L with the manual 6 speed tranny that pulled like a mule. For the guys complaining about the newer trucks not towing as good its probably because you went from a manual to a automatic with a higher gear ratio. Try using the (if you have the option)shift button in manual mode on your automatic when your towing to keep your RPM's up when your trying to get to a cruising speed. I have the 6.7l ford now deleted all emissions components and I'm very satisfied with the towing performance. I tow a 30+5' dovetail gooseneck loaded with a 90hp tractor and it handles it well.

I have a 2011 6.7. Deleted it, added a Smarty JR67 to it and a S&B Intake. I was getting around 21-22 on the hwy and 17-18 in town with 265 tires. I put 295 M/T on it and I am around 17 on the hwy and 15 in town. The truck will run. I keep my foot out of it most of the time. It is also a good looking truck. I will say that as soon as these tire wear out, I am prolly going back to 265s since this is my daily driver. I will prolly stay with the M/Ts though. If I can find a little gas rig to drive daily, then I will put 20" wheels with 35x12.5-20R in it. I am still at least a year away from that though.

I'm looking at a 15 ram 2500 cummins 4x4. From what I've been told and seen, they are seeing high teens empty. For me there is no reason to delete, as warranty is worth a lot more. Once warranty is out I'll evaluate that option.

2008-2012 Didn't use urea and only had a DPF. Empty fuel mileage of about 13-14 was very common. The newer ones are better.

I get crappy mileage out of both my Dodges, though my '99 8.0L get's a heck of a lot better gas mileage than my 2004 8.3L.

2008 4x4 deleted, with the 295/70/17 it has reached 19 mpg. Sitting on 103,000 miles and it has not spent the night (or day) in the shop. December I brought 20k worth of 32' trailer loaded with I-beam from Maddil, OK to Wolfe City, TX. 65-70 mph down 377 and across 82.

I still don't know what that truck WON'T pull. And it's the fastest truck I've ever owned. Wish the back cab was a bit deeper, but not enough to go buy a new truck. When I bought it, I figured 10 years, or 200,000 miles then I'll think about another truck. 10 years is going to happen first, and I don't want into another payment. Guess I've got 97,000 miles to go.
